The transformative power of recognition in the workplace

Recognition is not just about praising employees, it is a strategic tool that can significantly boost performance, engagement, and team cohesion.

While feedback is often biased and can demotivate employees by steering attention towards weaknesses rather than strengths, a strengths-based approach focus on recognizing and building on what employees do well leads to more effective performance and better outcomes.

To illustrate the power of recognition, let me share an example from my experience. Following a team-building workshop for the People & Organization (P&O) team of Volocopter, I received an appreciation email from the Chief People Officer (CPO).

This simple act of recognition had a profound impact, not only on my morale but also by providing a sense of purpose and meaning to my work.

Recognition is essential for maintaining high performance and ensuring employees feel safe at work. It addresses a basic need for safety, making employees feel valued and motivated to contribute their best efforts.

Recognizing and appreciating your team’s efforts is not just a nice-to-have; it’s a strategic imperative for any leader looking to foster a positive and high-performing workplace.
