I had quit alcohol in 1983, a decision that marked the start of a new chapter, but it wasn’t until I walked into the rooms of a 12-step program in 1987 that I truly began to understand the depth of what recovery and healing required.

Journaling was one of the first tools I embraced during this time. It wasn’t just about recording events or thoughts—it became a powerful way to process emotions, uncover patterns, and envision a new path forward. Quitting alcohol was only the beginning. The real transformation—the healing, rebuilding, and self-discovery—came from the work I did afterward.
