The Transformative Power of Giving

The Transformative Power of Giving

In a world often driven by individual success and personal gain, the power of giving exemplifies what is possible when we are in our best form. Throughout history, highly successful and influential individuals have showcased the remarkable impact that philanthropy and giving back can have on society. From industry trailblazers to inspiring artists, their actions have not only transformed lives but also highlighted the significance of using one’s success to make a positive difference.?

Industrialist, Philanthropist, and Business Magnate?

Andrew Carnegie might be as well known for his philanthropic endeavors and investments in education and the public library system as he is for his powerhouse reputation as one of the world’s most successful business magnates. Carnegie, a man who built an incredible and lasting empire, with extreme wealth was also quoted to say, “The man who dies rich, dies disgraced.” He authored an essay called, “The Gospel of Wealth” where he laid out his claim that those who acquired wealth had a moral obligation to use their resources to benefit society. Carnegie’s commitment to education resulted in his private funding of more than 2,500 public libraries! I am sure THIS would be the legacy by which he would want to be remembered. His philosophy of giving and his practical contributions have left an indelible mark on society. His approach to using wealth to enhance the lives of others continues to inspire philanthropists and changemakers to this day. Carnegie died on August 11, 1919, but his legacy as a philanthropic pioneer endures through the institutions and initiatives he helped establish.?

With or Without You?

Similarly, U2's Bono has used his fame and influence to advocate for various social and humanitarian causes. Bono has used his platform and voice to advocate for causes that are important to him, such as human rights and social justice, earning him numerous awards including a Nobel Peace Prize. Bono’s philanthropic efforts have been focused on addressing global issues such as poverty, disease, and social injustice. He co-founded several organizations that work toward positive change, including DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) in 2002 and ONE Campaign in 2004. These organizations aim to raise awareness and mobilize resources to fight extreme poverty and preventable diseases in Africa. “We’re not looking for charity. We’re looking for justice. We can’t fix every problem, but the ones we can, we must.” – Bono?

“Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.”?

As for social impact driven corporations, Patagonia has become synonymous with social responsibility. The outdoor clothing brand has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the environment through initiatives like the “1% for the Planet” campaign, donating 1% of its sales to environmental organizations. This exemplifies how a business can embed giving into its core values, contributing not only to its financial success but also to the betterment of society.?

One for One?

What about the popular shoe brand TOMS? This company stands out with its “One for One” model. For every pair of shoes sold, the company donates a pair to a child in need. This innovative approach has not only driven the brand’s growth but also provided tangible assistance to countless children around the world.?

Power of “WE"?

Giving local! Organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast epitomize the importance of community engagement. By providing a safe environment, mentors, and an educational support system for children to learn, grow, and thrive, we showcase the lasting impact of investing in the future generation. As the Director of Philanthropy, I have been blessed to be surrounded by incredibly inspiring individuals and companies who believe in our mission driven impact, purpose propelled partnerships, and the power of “We!” These amazing community leaders, and giving focused organizations make not only the Boys & Girls Club better, but our community better as well.?

24601?

Club friend and champion, Charles Antis, CEO of Antis Roofing & Waterproofing, delved into the timeless narrative of “Les Misérables.” He contemplated the transformative encounter between the benevolent priest and Jean Valjean, finding in it a powerful testament to the enduring influence of kindness and empathy. Charles astutely observes that it was precisely this wellspring of compassion and understanding that impelled Valjean to run his business with the same elevated purpose that had previously changed his life for the better.? “It has a positive effect! If you walk into Antis Roofing today, it works so well! Everyone is so happy! We know that literally everything we do has a positive effect, and we have a happy cultural and higher retention rate!” He too understands that our truest form is to help “make everyone the healthiest versions of themselves, whoever they may be.” That’s why Antis Roofing & Waterproofing, an Orange County based roofing company, has made giving back one of its primary tenets and it's what sets them apart in a competitive industry. They give because it’s part of their values, AND because it’s good business.??

Conclusion??

When we discover purpose over prosperity, we see the world in a different light. We see our role and responsibility to change the narrative for those who suffer, or to leave this planet a little better than we found it. In a world that often over-emphasizes personal success, the stories of these remarkable individuals and companies, as well as your greater service potential with organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast, serve as a reminder of the profound impact that giving can have. By embracing the power of giving, we can create a more compassionate, equitable, and thriving world for generations to come.?

What a powerfully written piece that was jam packed with impact. Loved every word! Helps to imagine just how much good there is and how much overwhelming potential for positive change there is, if we could spark and align this spirit for "we" and compassionate giving. Reading about Carnegie and his long lasting impact and legacy, made me appreciate my son Jonathan. He is a Sheriff Deputy in TX and was honored with the Carnegie Medal for Heroism a few years back for trying to save a life. All these years later, and Andrew Carnegie's powerful and positive legacy to honor life and giving lives on in so many ways, in so many arenas, from libraries to law enforcement. Thank you for all you do, and all the children's lives you change for the better, through your leadership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast! Blessings all around!
