The Transformative Power of Empathy in Leadership

Building Resilience

Dear Subscribers,

In this edition of our “Building Resilience” newsletter series, we are embarking on a profound exploration of a vital aspect of leadership : "Empathy"

Let’s delve deeper into the transformative power of empathy in fostering understanding and respecting the opinions of others.

The Transformative Power of Empathy in Leadership

Empathy is not merely a soft skill; it’s the cornerstone of exceptional leadership.

It’s the profound ability to step into someone else’s shoes, to genuinely understand their thoughts, emotions, and perspectives.

An empathetic leader creates a workspace that is inclusive, compassionate, and collaborative. Empathy means actively listening, not just hearing.

It involves showing genuine compassion and appreciation for the unique experiences and viewpoints of your team, colleagues, and stakeholders.

It means recognizing and validating the feelings and concerns of others.

Empathetic leaders possess the incredible capacity to embrace diverse perspectives.

They seek to understand before seeking to be understood, and they prioritize people over processes.

They create an environment where every voice is heard and valued.

Lessons from Japan . My journey- My personal Experience

In the mid-‘90s, I had the privilege of collaborating in a large Oilfield development with a Japanese oil and gas company in a joint venture with PDVSA (Venezuelan National Oil Company as a CFO

During 5 years I had the privilege to have been assigned to their main offices in Tokyo and later on in the development of the oil field

That gave me a unique lens to appreciate the significance of empathy in leadership in Japanese culture. It is part of their culture in the DNA

Japanese leadership doesn’t rush into decisions. Instead, they make sure that every voice is heard, every perspective is considered, and consensus is reached before making critical choices.

This practice is deeply rooted in respect for differing viewpoints and the belief that collective wisdom leads to better, more informed decisions.

In fact they are very well known to take more time than a typical American Company taking decisions, due to their work to put everybody on board.

I have particularly an experience by myself

I still remember been the CFO of that project and a very impacting operational decision was going to be taken and I dint agree the way it was taken, and the VP of Operations and the CEO of the Company came to me to personally discuss my point of view , and my opinion even it was not directly my area of expertise, ( but I had a strong point ), was taken into consideration and my opinion was accepted.

That marked me forever because it gave me the model to follow when a decision has to be made, and take into consideration the opinion of others

About Jose Pereira

Jose Pereira, a former oil company executive with thirty-five years of experience and the former CEO of Citgo Petroleum, was unjustly detained and held captive in Venezuela as a member of the CITGO6, a group of six Americans employed by Citgo.

His wrongful captivity, based solely on his American nationality, lasted for 1,775 days, from November 21, 2017, to October 1, 2022.

Since returning from his five-year detention, Pereira has reconnected with his family and written his memoir. He stands up for Americans unlawfully detained overseas and strives to modify US laws concerning these crimes.

Pereira continues to leverage his experiences living and working in multiple countries to engender compassion in individuals of all ethnicity and across all cultural and political considerations to bring hostages home.

He empowers others to make positive changes in the world as he works to re-acclimate to society and is passionate about joining his voice with others intent on raising awareness.

About the book: the Pre -Order? campaign is on going of the book " "From Hero to Villain-The true Story of the CITGO6"

Pereira's book is a riveting account of the events leading up to and during the imprisonment of the CITGO6. Notably, during most of his detainment, Pereira and his wife engaged in a death-defying act reminiscent of Anne Frank secreting her diary from the Nazis. They smuggled letters to each other, which boosted his morale to keep living another day and inspired this book upon release. These carefully written words served as a vital resource for Pereira in outlining his memoir. The determination and bravery embodied by him and his wife in preserving these letters under such punishing duress add a remarkable layer of depth to Pereira’s story.

When you read his accounts, you are there with him in the gritty cell, enduring the agony of fellow prisoners, then finally rejoicing when he hears the news he is going home.

Pereira’s story has since evolved into a movement: changing the narrative of what it takes to bring the wrongfully detained home. This is a work unlike any other. The advent of critical change is making a difference not only in the lives of prisoners; it is transforming global politics around these cases. Sometimes, it is the quietest voice that influences and alters our trajectory. Also in the works: a guidebook providing recommendations to returning detainees to enable their successful reintegration into society—the only publication of its kind.
