Highlighting Maritime Excellence
Within the Maritime sector, we have optimised a variety of applications, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and excellence, as seen below:
The technologies used and solutions delivered are versatile and applicable across many sectors.
3 recent projects stand out amongst the hundreds we have delivered to Maritime customers that naturally have relevance to the Maritime market, but also beyond to other sectors:
1. Multi-MW Containerised Power, Control & Automation System
A key multi-million-pound project currently being delivered to an esteemed client within the Renewables Energy sector is set to power and control a market-leading electrically powered subsea drilling superstructure with our solution neatly containerised and housed on the back deck of the vessel shown above and below.
Our innovative package consists of a 1.8MW liquid cooled drives suite, complete with motion controller, and provides an end-to-end mechatronic implementation. We were also responsible for designing and delivering the entire mechanical drivetrain componentry including pinion, planetary gearbox and dog clutch.
The drive expertise iconsys has brought to bear, informed by our many years of experience, proved invaluable to meeting requirements in this application. Traditionally, monopile drilling rigs are run through hydraulic power, but given the sizing of the components, an electrical solution was required. This “groundbreaking” venture creates more opportunity for future wind farm prospects.?
In addition to the drive system, we have worked tirelessly alongside our customer to bring to life the umbrella system. It’s motion controller acts as the main safety program for the broader control system, as well as integrating 9 subsystems from multiple 3rd party suppliers across the drilling rig, to provide common control, monitoring and sequential operation via SCADA interface.
Real-time trending, analytics and reporting is achieved with an ibaHD-Server plantwide historian.
The drive system and umbrella system are housed in 2 x 40 ft offshore containers respectively, with the latter boasting a custom-made ergonomic control room for the drilling operators. Additionally, 2 x 20ft 440V and 660V switchboard containers are supplied to provide project-wide power distribution.
2. Power Conversion for Offshore Applications
iConvert? is an innovative power conversion system, applicable for both onshore and offshore applications. Our knowledge in this domain was recognised when PD&MS chose us to collaborate on the groundbreaking 'Stillstrom' project for Maersk Supply Service – the world's pioneering full-scale offshore power buoy for vessels.
iConvert? is the core component in being able to harnesses offshore wind farm energy, delivering it to vessels through their state-of-the-art power buoy.
Engineered with a commitment to environmental sustainability, its primary objective is to contribute to the maritime industry's decarbonisation. By mitigating idle emissions during mooring, iConvert? facilitates a seamless transition from fossil-based fuels to green electricity, significantly reducing emissions and noise pollution during buoy operation.?
The scale of our power buoy is substantial, capable of efficiently powering vessels whilst they are at sea. The onward plan involves new configurations to allow offshore charging, with an ambition of scaling up the operations and deploying these innovative solutions in various locations alongside wind farms globally.?
The continued development of iConvert? is a strategic enabler for power conversion needs and can play a key role in advancing eco-friendly practices within all sectors.
3. Intelligent Energy Storage & Management using iConvert??
As a forward-thinking organisation, we are committed to ensuring our solution, iConvert? is suitable for the varying range of applications across the maritime sector and beyond.
As a demonstration of this, we worked with a consortium, including Cemex and Warwick Manufacturing Group, and were awarded funding as part of Round 2 of the Clean Maritime Demonstrator Competition.?The outcome of this collaboration was the successful completion of a feasibility study exploring a Smart Shore Power System with Intelligent Energy Storage and Management.
This innovative system is designed to accommodate self-discharging commercial vessels with high peak transient electrical loads and address the challenges faced by ports, wharves, and docks constrained by available grid capacity in the local area.
We are now fully engaged in taking this advancement to the next step, with the consortium having been awarded funding through round 4 of the Clean Maritime Demonstrator Competition.
Allowing iconsys to take this forward to an operational demonstrator aids future developments and supports the overall drive towards decarbonising of the Maritime sector.
