?

In this exciting investigation, we will examine some of the most interesting aspects of the use of AI, redefining how we carry out our day-to-day activities and several economies and how the future will be one of the harmonious merger between man and machine. But we also have to address the other side of the coin which is the ethical issues and other challenges that come with the proliferation of AI in all sectors. We need to appreciate however both the advantages and the challenge in order to take advantage of this groundbreaking technology in a responsible manner that’s beneficial to society at large.

?

1. Introduction

?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come out of fiction to present itself as one of the dominant facets of human life. Often considered the power of a computer to imitate human cognitive functions- AI proves to be an important means in making various processes more efficient and easier. With the growth of machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP) and AI Robotics, AI technologies are changing the way people do things across the globe. According to a study conducted by McKinsey Global Institute, AI sub-sector alone may be able to bring US$ 13 trillion growth by the year 2030 (McKinsey Global Institute, 2018).

?

2. AI in Communication

?

One of the fields where great progress has been witnessed is communication and with the presence of AI, the potential of the field is massive. Sophisticated artificial intelligence powered software algorithms are used by Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant to perform tasks assigned to them. In a survey conducted by Statista, it was shown that in the year 2021, 55% of American households owned at least one smart speaker, up from 43% in 2020.

?

Additionally, chatbots have improved customer service (CS) interactions by instantly responding to questions. Patients don’t have to wait on the line or go through a plethora of phone options; instead, they can turn to AI-powered responsive chatbots for their needs. Chats are also said to save companies nearly $8 billion in the year 2022 as per the report of the Juniper Research group. Not only does this improve the customers' experience, but also enables organizations to use their resources more efficiently allowing win-win for all.

?

AI-based translation services such as Google Translator have made international communication more fluid than ever. Be it business executives working with foreign clients, or tourists in a novel culture, these AI-based services can help speak the language and get things done. Over Google translator alone, around 100 billion words are translated every single day (Google, 2020), which makes possible the interactions among cultures today easier and more possible than before.

?

3. AI in Home and Lifestyle

?

Homes and lifestyles improvements are also AI powered. For example, AI can be installed in homes with smart devices, such as the Nest Thermostat which is said to save around 15% of energy usage within the home on a yearly basis (Energy Star, 2020). The recommendations given to Netflix fans or Amazon users are also derived from actual AI algorithms which have a high probability of purchasing something, increasing expected turnover by 30% (Harvard Business Review, 2016).

?

Moreover, health tracking apps and devices such as Fitbit have artificial intelligence technologies that can analyze activity, sleep, and heart rate data to promote a healthy lifestyle. The worldwide market size of AI-integrated health and fitness mobile applications is expected to reach US$20 billion by 2026 (Market Research Future, 2021).

?

4. AI in Transportation

?

With regard to transportation AI is fundamentally transforming services such as Uber and Lyft that primarily empower ride-sharing commuters. These services are capable of finding the best route possible, the least time-consuming waiting period or even offer surge pricing at these times. Research indicates that ride-sharing systems have raised urban mobility by 30% (University of California, 2018).

?

Pioneered by Tesla and Waymo, autonomous vehicles are operated using AI which processes data collected in real-time from various sensors. This makes driving safer and more efficient. As stated by NHTSA (2021), traffic accidents can be prevented by as much as 90% thanks to self-driving technology, which could result in a whopping saving of around $190 billion every year in accident-related expenses.

?

AI is also useful in navigation systems where Waze and Google Maps use data from users to determine the fastest route possible based on the current traffic situations. This significantly improves the driving experience.

?

5. AI in Education

?

The influence of AI on education has been great in that it enhances learning through individualization. For instance, AI is employed by DreamBox Learning in evaluating the performance of students before customizing their lessons. According to research conducted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, students who engage in personalized learning outperform their counterparts enrolled in traditional classrooms by more than 30%.

?

AI platforms like Duolingo have introduced online tutoring mechanisms that allow language learners to receive tailored lessons as they learn new languages. Not only does AI in education allow for the identification of students in need of reinforcement, but it also improves the effectiveness of teaching in general.

?

6. Ethical Considerations and Risks Involved

?

Once again, the risks associated with the use of AI must be stressed in spite of its many benefits. Issues concerning privacy and data protection are of huge concern, due to the fact that data needs to be provided if AI&AP solutions are to be implemented efficiently. According to an IBM report, 45% of the consumers in the world are apprehensive regarding the utilization of their private data by businesses for AI-related operations (IBM, 2020).

?

The other main concern is the impact of job loss through automation. Some figures predict that a big 15% of the world’s labor market will be out of work, displaced by automation practices which are supposed to be adopted by 2030 (World Economic Forum, 2020). Think of how AI enabled automation may result in unemployment of many, making your work role never secure. This could result in displacement and job loss, with people struggling to adjust to and navigate the available job openings.

?

AI support offers great advantages; however, it has its draw backs which cannot be ignored. Many an algorithm will make a mistake, or show some kind of bias, and in this case, the choice must be looked down upon in high regard, this is not the perfect world in which we can just trust AI. Indeed, even AI systems have their shortcomings, wherein, at times they fail to comply with human values or make the appropriate choices for the circumstance. This can turn out to be catastrophic especially in areas like medicine, banking, and even policing. There needs to be a balance between AI making strides and the AI making sure its judgments are completely transparent, responsible, and ethical so that technology can grow at a healthy rate.

?

Moreover, the world turning to AI can also worsen human capabilities over a period of time as our own skill levels and capabilities may become adversely affected due to the use of AI. It is not difficult to give in to the habit of using AI tools and virtual assistants to do the work for us, where in the future, we may not be able to execute basic tasks requiring mental power and other physically demanding capabilities. Degradation in problem solving ability, critical thought process, and self-reliance may worsen to a level where humanity would begin to rely fully on technology and will lack the ability to function without it.

?

7. The Future of AI

?

While some members of society fear the advancements of AI technologies, others are very optimistic about them, including the consumer market. Predictions show that in the coming years, AI will be an integral part of our daily routines. By 2025, for instance, the American company Gartner predicts that more than half of the organizations will abandon the testing phase fully and make AI operational 75% of the time (Gartner, 2020). The level which can be described as a form of untapped potential exists. In fact, AI has great potential in assisting with various global problems such as environmental challenges, deficiencies in healthcare, and inequalities in education. For instance, Machine Learning can assess climate risk and support a change in the environment to help strategists.

?

The future of AI is also the increased adoption of AI technology known as Explainable AI which seeks to interpret the ways in which AI makes its decisions. This is a very important step toward creating AI systems that people can have trust and responsibility in, especially in essential areas such as the healthcare system and law enforcement. To reduce the chances of undesirable or bias-based outcomes, AI-driven conclusions will need to be ethical and in line with people’s expectations in the society.

?

8. Conclusion

?

It is easy to notice how artificial intelligence becomes rooted in all spheres of human lives: making people's lives easier, operations more efficient and interrelations more creative. But for all advantages it still brings, there are apparently ethical concerns, abuses, and development principles which would ensure the maximum utility is derived out of this technology. As technological advancements manifest into the practical integration of AI systems, the partnership between a machine and a human should unbind creativity with our most difficult societal and productive tasks. On the other hand, it is absolutely critical that the same intensity of focus and application is directed in addressing the dangers that come with AI technologies so as to ensure these systems are beneficial to people rather than a threat to human welfare.

?

If there is a proper equilibrium reached between AI and ethical capabilities of a person, AI technologies can be implemented to further human capabilities when working hand in hand allowing to build a more prosperous future for everyone.
