Transformational Leadership Insights Newsletter Issue #2
Transformational Leadership 101
Empowering leaders with tools, insights and opportunities to become transformational leaders.
Welcome to the latest edition of the Transformational Leadership Insights Newsletter.
In this issue, we are going to dive deeper into the heart of transformational leadership, the Unity Conditions, a powerful framework developed right here in Ne Zealand that transforms teams and organisations alike. Starting with an article from Growth Development's CEO and NZ's leading Thought Leader in Transformational Leadership & Change, Melanie Bedggood talks about one of the key causes behind leadership failure to achieving sustainable outcomes and how to go about addressing this issue.
When Leadership Fails to Create Lasting Change and How to Fix It
If we are serious about achieving outcomes, whether in the public sector or business, we need to stop judging leadership success solely by the strategies produced. We must start measuring success by the outcomes delivered. Strategic plans are crucial, but they are only the starting point. The real work (and real success) comes from the successful implementation, along with the ability to learn from failure. Too often, the fear of perceived failure leads leaders to move on to another role, further up the ladder, without developing the resilience and gaining the valuable lessons that come from facing challenges head-on. Failure may be a strong word, but it is often where our greatest learnings come from, if we are willing to confront it and take the lessons it offers.
Why Unity Conditions Are the Key to Transformational Leadership Success
At the core of transformational leadership is a simple truth: leadership is not just about skills or strategies—it is about creating the right conditions for success.
In many leadership approaches, the focus is on building individual capabilities, such as communication or decision-making. While these are important, transformational leadership takes it a step further by creating environments that foster trust, alignment, and a shared sense of purpose. These are the Unity Conditions.
1. The Enabler – This role focuses on creating an environment where trust and respect thrive. It is about ensuring that every team member feels safe and has the confidence to speak up and contribute, fostering a climate of innovation and collaboration.
2. The Aligner – This critical role aligns organisational goals with the personal motivations of each team member. When people see how their work contributes to the bigger mission, they become more engaged and committed.
3. The Unifier – The Unifier is about building a shared sense of purpose and belonging. Leaders in this role inspire and unite their teams, focusing on a strong, unified culture guided by purpose.
These conditions do not just apply to a single project or initiative—they form the foundation of long-term success. Leaders who embrace the Unity Conditions are not only managing their teams; they are transforming them, creating spaces where people can thrive and innovation can flourish.

Q&A: Applying Unity Conditions to Leadership Challenges
Many of you reached out after our last edition with questions about how to apply transformational leadership in your teams. Here are a few of the most common questions that came up:
Q1: How can I create an environment of trust if my team has experienced recent change?
A: Building trust after change takes time, but the Enabler role within the Unity Conditions can help. Start by being transparent with your team about challenges and inviting open dialogue. Trust is built when people feel heard and respected, so prioritise communication and inclusiveness in your leadership approach.
Q2: My team is struggling to stay aligned with organisational goals, how can I fix this?
A: The Aligner role is about connecting individual motivations with the broader mission. Take time to understand what drives each team member, and show them how their work fits into the bigger picture. When your team sees the impact of their efforts, they will naturally feel more connected and engaged.
Q3: How do I create a sense of unity in a remote or hybrid working environment?
A: In a hybrid or remote setting, the Unifier role becomes even more crucial. To build unity, ensure that your team feels a shared sense of purpose, even if they are not physically together. Regular virtual check-ins, clear communication about the team’s goals, and opportunities for collaboration can help maintain that sense of connection.
