Transformation. Who to follow?
I have been reading about Transformation for weeks, going through books, frameworks and close to a hundred business cases. I covered Scaled Agile 5.0 Business Agility, Spotify's model, Digital Transformation: survive and thrive in an era of mass extension, Designed for digital, Dual Transformation: how to reposition today's business while creating the future, 77 Building blocks of digital transformation, Leading Organization: ten timeless truths, Beyond Performance 2.0 (McKinsey's framework for Transformation), Unlocking the Customer Value Chain: how decoupling drive customer disruption.
At this stage I realize that no framework is providing you with a full vision on Transformation. Each author, group of authors or working group remains in its own sphere and misses key elements. One of the reasons is that some authors or working groups have experiences that are either more IT oriented or more Business oriented. They seldom have both of them. Most frameworks are actually IT based. So don't expect to know it all by reading a book or learning one framework.
Transformation frameworks is a field that is pretty new. For instance Unlocking the Customer Value Chain, Beyond Performance 2.0 and SAFe 5.0 Business Agility were only published in mid to late 2019.
If you are creating a framework for businesses to solve their issues or if you are a consultant adopting a framework, get a vision first! This is not what i did (i went deep into Scaled Agile) and i realized my approach was wrong.
SAFe should learn from McKinsey's approach, McKinsey should learn from Unlocking the Customer Value Chain and so on. All these perspectives are complementary for a business to find solutions on sustainably its growth.
If you are a business searching for solutions to your business problem (going from good to great, from great to greater-still or in urgent need of a turnaround scenario), don't narrow down to a framework (ex: SAFe, 5As, Less, ...). This would be a big mistake. It's not about picking a framework but picking methods that will lead you to a better situation in terms of organization performance and health. Understand the avenues at your disposal. Start with looking at the simplest approach (minimum effort to reach the targeted outcome) and I would suggest you look into Unlocking the Customer Value Chain (chapter 5 and 6).
As I progress my research I will try to provide you guys with a vision as well as actionable content. Based on an X-ray of your business and its context, my goal is to suggest relevant solutions tailored to your requirements.
Feel free to reach out if you need advice or help. 70% of transformation initiatives still fail as per McKinsey's data. There is a recipe to be within the 30% of successful transformations.
