I was asked over the brake, "What do you do first when you lead a transformation?". My answer, "I always workout how to play to the strengths of the team inherited". I look to Rugby for this.
Most rugby positions have a stereotypical template but the uniqueness of the backrow, scrumhalf and flyhalf are more intriguing .
A flyhalf tends to be creative and a super communicator. The people around constantly sensing the direction of travel and what they need to do to achieve it. Hopefully it's towards the try line. A true strategist and communicator.
The scrumhalf provides the stable platform from which the flyhalf can operate. This can be very difficult as the forwards and backs sometimes appear to be playing different games, or even sport, to everyone else on the pitch! A genius at work.
Now to the position I can speak with authority on, backrow. Any school team captain or coach will know you can typically find these individuals in detention! They like pushing boundaries, being different, and being both fast and agile they will take on any problem and solve it. The success of the team comes first.
So, I look for a strategist and communicator. Someone able to push the boundaries and finally, someone who can bring this together. I'm not always lucky and have to adjust my approach to suit.
