Transform Your Strategy into Action with OGSM and a ‘Learn by Doing’ Approach

Transform Your Strategy into Action with OGSM and a ‘Learn by Doing’ Approach

The benefits of OGSM are well-documented. It establishes a long-term vision and unified direction, enhances communication, promotes ownership and creativity, facilitates effective feedback and continuous improvement, and ensures structured initiatives and clear priorities, to name a few!!

However, its true value emerges through effective implementation. This is where the principle of ‘learning by doing’ becomes indispensable. By incorporating OGSM into daily operations and involving teams in real projects, organisations can cultivate a culture of continuous improvement and practical problem-solving.

NewLeaf’s ‘Learning by Doing’ Framework

The “Integrated Framework System” was developed from our 30-year track record of helping large organisations who were struggling to make change stick. It addresses the frustrations of companies trapped in a constant cycle of starting new change initiatives without ever reaching their full potential or desired outcomes, and without achieving a cultural shift in habits and behaviours.

“The unique ability of NewLeaf is to absolutely focus on helping us deliver change through people. We are doing a lot of hard system changes but we can only do that successfully through the people in the business. The benefit and values we get from NewLeaf is not only to know but to successfully do something differently in their day to day work” - Head of Change, Leading banking group.

As experienced Management Consultants specialising in systems thinking, we designed this framework to comprise integrated and interdependent activities, proven to raise capability, enable innovative thinking, and achieve effective business results simultaneously. We transform business results by developing people and improving work environments, operating across various levels within the business to achieve substantial and sustainable improvements.

Our Integrated Framework System is unique because its systems-thinking approach ensures that learning is continuously applied, challenges are addressed in real time, and strategic goals are consistently aligned with daily operations. This interconnected methodology prevents siloed efforts, promoting sustained improvement and tangible business results.

The Integrated Framework System includes the following key components:

Chartered Projects:?These projects deliver tangible results and serve as a vehicle for “learning by doing”. These projects ensure alignment with common business objectives, avoiding “siloed change”. They focus on delivering quantifiable, cost-benefit results.

Interactive Workshop Sessions:?The workshops serve as interventions alongside the project work, providing leaders with new skills to enhance their projects, and offering opportunities to reflect, add new thinking, and make adjustments. This ensures that projects remain value-adding and purposeful. The workshops are not designed primarily to instill new learning but are focused on putting learning into practice and “making things happen.” Therefore, the workshops aim to raise capability by working not only on knowledge but, more importantly, on the skills required to implement improvement and the right mindset to execute effectively. To achieve this, the workshops are divided equally into theory, discussions on real-life situations, and exercises reflecting real-life scenarios. Regularly coming together in these workshops also allows leaders to learn from each other and build strong team dynamics. This peer learning and team-building aspect ensures that they can support and challenge each other, creating a cohesive and high-performing team.

One-to-One Individual Coaching:?This aspect provides support for individual challenges. Personal Development Plans are created and reviewed to help with their specific challenges.

Programme Steering:?Structured reviews of progress are necessary at both one-to-one coaching sessions and at the senior level. These sessions facilitate substantial change and strategic shifts, ensuring effective programme steering. Programme Steering offers a “Thinking Environment” to reflect on how change is made within the organisation.

This combined system of activities is critical as the sum of the individual components maximises the output of the whole framework, rather than activities being performed in isolated silos.

Success is measured by:

  1. Achieving tangible business results
  2. Personal and team development
  3. A cultural shift towards continuous improvement thinking

Our genuine desire to help others grow and feel valued in their roles drives our approach. By building capability, driving performance, encouraging cultural change, and sustaining results, we aim to make a lasting impact both personally and professionally.
