Imagine yourself on your way to work or anywhere else (a trip for example) and you are in a hurry. You go to a café-bar to have breakfast at 08:00h. You go in, and you see that the sandwiches are not on the shelves, nor are the muffins, biscuits, croissants, ...so, to make time, you order a coffee. But you realise that the machine is not yet on, it will take a while. The shop assistant apologises, ‘I'm sorry, we open at 08:00h, but the sandwiches will be ready soon, if you want something to eat’ Can you imagine? I'm sure it's happened to you at some point ......

All this would not happen if the café in question applied the concept of ‘Lombardi Time’.

What is Lombardi Time ?

It refers to the practice of arriving 15 minutes before a meeting, appointment, events ..... It is a real example from a NFL coach who insisted that his players and coaches must arrive 15 minutes before a practice, or they were considered late.

Lombardi once told a rookie player, “You are eight minutes late.” The rookie arrived at practice seven minutes before its start.

Who was Lombardi ?

Vince Lombardi was one of the NFL's most successful coaches, having built a magical 1959-1967 era as the head coach of the Greenbay Packers. No one has achieved more success in less time than Lombardi did during his nine seasons in Green Bay Packers. He won five NFL championships, including Super Bowls I and II, and compiled a remarkable 89-29-4 regular-season record.

To understand his significance, in addition to being in the NFL Hall of Fame, the Super Bowl winning trophy is named Vince Lombardi in his honour.

Think for a moment.

How many events have you had to restart because someone was late?. How many meetings have you had to put on hold because someone or several people were late?.... Now add up all that time lost in the last year. How many hours are they?What other activities could you have done? Maybe spend time with your family, or take x days off or do that pending hobby ....

Preparation

How many times have you heard the following:

You are in a meeting and someone asks: What is the content of this meeting? If that person followed the Lombardi Time, arriving 15 minutes later, he or she would be able to :

• Have reviewed the agenda
• Think of a series of ideas, actions to bring forward.
• Perhaps look in his or her notes for similar topics
• Jot down interesting questions

How many times has it happened to you ....? :

You have a meeting with a potential client or customer, or supplier ..... and when you go online or get to the meeting room, you don't:

• You haven't looked at their organisation's news.
• You haven't looked at their organisation's news.
• You have not checked your previous notes .
• You have not looked at the professional profile of the attendees.
• You didn't find out about the challenges in their industry.
