Transform Your Leadership: Start Asking the Right Questions

Hello, Leaders!

How often do you pause to think about the questions you’re asking your team?

If your answer is “not often,” you’re not alone. We’re all busy—meetings, deadlines, decisions. It’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of just getting things done. But here’s a leadership truth that’s worth pausing for:?

The questions you ask shape the answers you get, and ultimately, the direction of your team.

Why Questions Matter:

Think about the last big decision you had to make. Now think about the questions that guided that decision. Were they open-ended, encouraging exploration and innovation? Or were they narrow, focused on immediate outcomes?

As leaders, we often underestimate the power of asking the right questions. But the best leaders know that asking thoughtful, probing questions can unlock new insights, inspire creative thinking, and even shift the trajectory of an entire project.

Here’s what I’ve learned about asking the right questions:

  • Open-Ended Questions: These invite exploration. Instead of asking, “Can we meet this deadline?” try “What would it take to meet this deadline?” The first question is binary—it’s about yes or no. The second invites creativity and problem-solving.

  • Reflective Questions: These encourage introspection. After a project wraps up, instead of just reviewing the outcomes, ask, “What did we learn from this experience?” It’s a question that fosters growth and continuous improvement.

  • Future-Focused Questions: These push the team to think ahead. Instead of only dealing with the present, ask, “What trends should we be preparing for?” This type of question positions your team to be proactive rather than reactive.

Here’s a challenge for you: Over the next week, pay attention to the questions you’re asking. Are they driving the results you want??

If not, experiment with reframing them. Ask more open-ended, reflective, and future-focused questions. You might be surprised at the new directions your team can take.

Remember, leadership isn’t just about providing answers—it’s about guiding your team to discover the best answers themselves. And that journey often begins with the right question.
