Higher NIM T2 values linked to poorer outcomes post-STEMI

A recent study examined the role of T2 values in the noninfarcted myocardium (NIM) and surrounding tissues in patients who suffered from ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The study involved 171 patients who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Results showed that higher T2 values in the NIM were associated with larger infarct sizes, microvascular obstruction, and left ventricular dysfunction. Moreover, elevated T2 values were linked to a significantly increased risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE), including myocardial reinfarction, at a 17-month follow-up. These findings suggest that higher NIM T2 values post-STEMI independently predict worse cardiovascular outcomes.
