Are you serious about improving your communication? If so, there's one key shift that can make all the difference: stop making it about you, and focus on the other person. Effective communication thrives when it moves from self-centered concerns to true partnership and collaboration.
The foundation for better communication is built on empowering the person you're speaking with. One of the simplest and most impactful ways to do this? Ask for permission.
By asking permission, you show respect and empower the person you’re speaking with. This increases their openness to listen, builds trust, and fosters a more collaborative environment.
I invite you to give asking permission a try. In my experience, when I ask for permission to share, I’ve noticed people become more receptive. The simple act of asking invites them into the conversation, rather than making them feel spoken at.
Pro Tip: If you’re used to being more of a “teller” than an “asker,” that’s okay. You can always stop and reset. I often find myself saying something like, “I’m sorry, I jumped in without asking. Is it okay if I share a solution that’s helped others in similar situations?” This small adjustment can turn the conversation around.
Remember, I’m rooting for your success!
