3 Ways to Improve Self-Awareness To Open Career Doors

Reflecting on the big “who I am” and “what do I want” questions isn’t just something that can help your own personal well-being. It’s also crucial for your career progression. In her LinkedIn Learning course on Developing Self Awareness, psychologist and mindset expert Gemma Leigh Roberts explains:?

“If you want to develop your leadership skills, enhance your career progression, or focus on your personal development, building self-awareness is critical.”

Here are three ways to build the kind of self-awareness that can make a difference in your career. For more details on how to do this including exercise files, check out the blog post.?

1. Develop awareness of what you really want. We spend a lot of time doing our jobs. It's important to look at how our job is filling (or doesn't fill) our cups. Roberts suggests writing out the top ten areas in your life that are most important to you, then rank your current satisfaction in each of those areas from 1-10. Think about what feels most important to shift to boost that satisfaction and the steps you'll take to make those changes. Consider journaling as a practice to track progress toward getting more of what you value most in your life.

2. Chart the "ripples" or how you affect others. “The ripple effect is when someone’s actions affect someone else, which in turn affects other people,” Roberts explains. Roberts has a process for tracking and developing more awareness around these ripples. The next time you experience a highly positive or negative interaction, jot down the name of the person who created it and what happened. Then write down who else was affected by the interaction and how—even if they weren't a part of the original interaction. When you're ready, focus on the effects you start yourself.?

3. Identify the sources and signals of your own stressors. By understanding how you respond to stress and why, you can position yourself to become exactly the kind of employee an organization wants when the going gets tough. Roberts suggests asking yourself: How do you know when you're stressed? What events or situations trigger stressful feelings for you? What happens to you when you're stressed—changes in mood or behavior and/or physical symptoms?

These tips and exercises from Gemma Leigh Roberts can help you create more space in your job for what you care about, identify how you may be unintentionally affecting others, and become more effective even in stressful times. These are all career-moving skills that can help you break career barriers.?
