Welcome back to "Hiring Insights: Data, AI & Us." This week, we're exploring a critical aspect of talent strategy: Hiring as a Service (HaaS) and how it can help you find your Ikigai.
"The quality of your life is determined by how you spend your time." - Brian Tracy
The average person spends between 70,000 and 90,000 hours at work. That is significant.?Yet, according to the Gallup 2023 Engagement Report, over 62% of adults do not feel engaged with their work, and many of those feel burned out.
The business loss of Low Engagement is estimated at $8.9 Trillion. But, this is about more than just productivity or retention. It's also about how we spend those 90,000 hours, a large portion of our precious few days on Earth.
Ikigai as a Career Framework
The Japanese concept of Ikigai, which means "living with meaning," provides a framework for aligning your passion, mission, profession, and vocation.
In his book "Blue Zones," Dan Buettner explores regions where people live exceptionally long and healthy lives, including Okinawa, Japan, where Ikigai is the daily motivator.?
Okinawans' strong social framework gives them a sense of belonging and purpose.?
Adopting an Ikigai-inspired approach in organizations translates to creating an employee-centric workplace ecosystem rather than placing people in ill-fitting roles. Is it worth it? On an individual level it is easier to why. Yet the business case is solid as well. Businesses with engagement employees avoid a portion of the $8.9 Trillion lost to disengagement and all of its negative consequences.?
When I coach candidates I advise them to find their Ikigai with the following steps before they consider their next role:
1?? What You Love: Identify your passions
2?? What You Are Good At: Recognize your skills
3?? What the World Needs: Align with a greater purpose
4?? What You Can Be Paid For: Ensure it's financially sustainable
When we find the intersection of these four elements, we unlock our Ikigai—a way of being where our work resonates deeply with our life's purpose.?
Integrating Ikigai with HR through HaaS
Where does this fit in the business world? I see a clear use case in Hiring as a Service. Hiring as a Service (HaaS) bridges the gap between Ikigai and Human Resources, creating a synergy that benefits employees and employers. HaaS focuses on placing the right people in the right roles and ensuring they align with their Ikigai. This approach has significant benefits for both employees and employers:
For companies, this means creating an environment where employees can thrive and contribute to a positive and dynamic workplace culture.?
