Transcending Psychosis: The Complexity of Comorbidity in Schizophrenia
Comorbidities remain one of the most persistent and challenging issues in clinical care and research on schizophrenia. New findings from the past several years, reviewed by Yum, Hwang, Nasrallah and Opler suggest that some comorbid disorders in patients with schizophrenia are biologically and pathologically distinct. This review also describes evidence of improved outcomes for specific assessments and treatments. Changes in DSM-5 and movements from funding agencies to 'real world' applications make it more urgent than ever to incorporate a view of this critical subgroup of patients in research and treatment programs based on the unique characteristics and the high rates of comorbidity.
