Biden- Harris Administration Releases National Strategy to Put Nature on the American Balance Sheet
The Biden-Harris administration announced last week its plans to create a roadmap for the quantification of the value the environment has on the North American economy. This data is proposed to be used as a guide to policy and business decisions, and ensure that nature is viewed as an asset on the balance sheet of the nation.?
“Natural assets, like land and water, underpin businesses, enhance quality of life, and act as a stabilizing force for economic prosperity and opportunity. They also help counteract the destabilizing risks to our environment and markets caused by climate change and nature loss. Yet the connections between nature and the economy are not currently reflected in our national economic statistics.”?
– Arati Prabhakar, The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Director?
The National Strategy to Develop Statistics for Environmental-Economic Decisions, as a historic roadmap, will initiate a series of efforts to include natural capital in the national economic accounting system so as to better understand the link between nature and the economy.?
In combination with current authorities and the integration of numerous existing natural capital measurement efforts across the government, the roadmap will ensure the organisation of information needed to inform decisions that will enhance future nature-dependent economic opportunities.?
