Trans-Saharan Highway : a project of approximately 10,000 km for stability and inclusive growth in the Maghreb and the Sahel

Happy new year 2023 !

Good news in 2023!

It has been more than 52 years since this project began, this Trans-Saharan Highway is almost finished. Almost 10,000 kilometers long, between Tunisia , Algeria , Mali, Niger , Nigeria and Chad.

It is part of a road network linking the 6 African countries to strengthen regional integration and to promote trade between the north and south of the Sahara, it is coupled with a fiber optic cable.

The financial envelope allocated by Algeria to this mega multinational Highway program is estimated at more than 3 billion dollars which began in the 1970s at the initiative of the African Economic Commission (ECA).

The technical and financial partners present noted with interest that the African Development Bank Group , through the ADF "African Development Fund", contributed to this mega program more than 120 million dollars, the equivalent of 23.3% of the total estimated cost (515 millions of dollars).

ADF financing is distributed as follows, 41.3 million for Chad, and 36.23 million for Niger.

In addition to the ADF, the Trans-Saharan Highway also benefits from the support of 6 other donors, namely the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) , the Banque de Développement des Etats de l’Afrique Centrale (BDEAC) , the Kuwait Fund, the fund OPEP and the Saudi Fund.

Impact :

It should be noted that there are economic repercussions on the development of this project, there are exceptional development potential of optical fiber on the backbone of the Trans-Saharan Highway which will be able to connect the north of Nigeria, Niger, Algeria and Tunisia to Europe. In addition, there are ongoing reflections on the association of the energy sector through the construction of a gas pipeline also along the Trans-Saharan Highway which would go from northern Nigeria to Algeria to have access to the European market.

The Trans-Saharan Highway will be linked to the Algerian port of Djendjen and the Tunisian port of Rades, which are the most important ports at the Mediterranean-North African level with the Highway link connecting these ports to the East-West Highway. This penetrating will allow to have the possibility of importing and exporting the goods of the 6 countries concerned by the Trans-Saharan Highway. It will also allow the landlocked countries of the Sahel, in particular Chad, Niger and Mali, to have direct access to the Mediterranean.

And there is an enormous potential and opportunities for inclusive growth and job creation, especially for young people, offered by the Trans-Saharan Highway, particularly in the sectors of agriculture and livestock farming, water, as well as solar and wind energy (clean and renewable sources of energy), and Saharan eco-tourism.
