Trans and Non-Binary Inclusivity in the Workplace
A member of the @JourneyHR team recently attended a fireside chat with Global Butterflies. Founded in 2015, Global Butterflies was created to bring better awareness to the business sector around the benefits of hiring trans and non-binary people.
Embracing a more diverse workplace brings numerous benefits, from boosting innovation to improving employee morale and company representation.
What are the benefits?
Inclusive workplaces where employees feel valued and respected tend to have higher levels of employee engagement and satisfaction. Not only this, but Harvard Business Review found that employees who feel they can be their authentic selves at work are 30% more likely to achieve high performance and 37% more likely to engage in collaborative teamwork.
When trans and non-binary employees are recruited and well-supported through training/development programs, this increases our sense of belonging, thus reducing turnover rates and improving overall job satisfaction.
How to create a diverse workplace?
Beyond having an accessible and fair recruitment process, such as job descriptions that do not inadvertently/unconsciously cater towards/away from a particular group, or offering reasonable adjustments, or using a range of job posting platforms to attract a wide range of candidates, we can create a diverse workplace by ensuring we have inclusive practices.

What does the law say?
In the UK, non-binary genders are not recognised in law. Global Butterflies believe there are systemic issues in the UK that isolate non-binary and trans people, for example in the Government Gateway ID – which trans people cannot use if their assigned gender does not match the gender of their birth certificate.
Take the time to think about your own documentation/email signature/workplace practises. Do you ask for a ‘Title’ in your new starter form? Is this necessary? Are there other options available (such as ‘Mx’) or a way for people to opt out/leave this blank if they so wish?

Allyship is crucial in creating inclusive workplaces. Founders of Global Butterflies @Rachel Reese and @Emma Cusdin see all underrepresented groups as connected, be it LGBTQIA+, women, people with disabilities – if one group is not supported, none of the groups can be truly supported.
