“The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good. Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom.” ~ James Allen, As A Man Thinketh
Commitment is an interesting word in terms of the behaviors that it invites. Some people are averse to committing because they imagine that by committing they are limiting their freedom in some way. This is why many will hedge their bets so to speak and try to conditionally commit. “I’ll do this if/and/or when that is done.” This is not commitment, it's equivication. This is an indication that their sense of self, their I AM, is not comfortable identifying with the commitment.
Commitment is like pregnancy. You can’t be sort of pregnant. It’s all or nothing. You either are or you aren’t. This is why we I encourage my clients to use the language “I AM a commitment.” It removes all doubt as to whether you’re fully in! As long as commitment is allowed to be conditional (an oxymoron by the way) the mind will be perturbed and confused and a confused mind does not act.
Calmness, as highlighted in the above quote by James Allen, is a consequence of knowing who I AM so that any commitment I make is aligned with this identity. There is no question, there is no equivocation, there is certainty. I will do this because I AM this. And because I AM this I can’t not deliver on the commitment. External circumstances don’t perturb or sway me. Doubt is not part of my thinking. And, this calmness of mind influences all around me. They experience me being the commitment and align their behaviors with me accordingly. You are now positioned to co-create coordinated movement.
Take time to notice the way external conditions attempt to compromise your willingness to commit. Then recall Neville’s quote that “When you know that consciousness is the one and only reality…you are free from the tyranny of second causes, free from the belief that there are causes outside of your own mind that can affect your life.” Then come back to the center of I AM.
To master anything, we must first master ourselves—our emotions, our thoughts, our actions. In times of uncertainty and disorder, self-discipline and self-mastery are not just essential but are your competitive advantage.
