The Traits of a Great Diplomat Compliment the Traits of a Great Leader.

Over the years I have had the privilege of working with some truly great leaders. I have also had the “opportunity” to observe and learn from many leaders that exhibited less than desirable traits. I say “opportunity” because in order to fully appreciate those that “do it right”, you need to fully understand the ramifications of taking shortcuts and “doing it wrong”. While frustrating at times, what better way than to witness it firsthand.

As we all know, there are many essential characteristics of a great leader.? The reality is it’s easy to forget the importance of being a great diplomat and how these characteristics actually compliment the characteristics of a great leader.

While diplomats must possess many unique traits, I believe there are five traits that truly standout and rise above the rest. Let's take a look shall we.

?1.???? Mature, Seasoned & Tested Emotional Intelligence –

In order to navigate through difficult situations as a leader, you must understand the differing perspectives of those on your team. Positive relationships must be built on a foundation of mutual respect & trust. Assuming others understand or perceive your direction the same as you, is one of the greatest mistakes a leader can make.

?2.???? Exemplary Conflict Resolution Skills –

Leaders will very often find themselves in situations where conflict arises. It simply can’t be avoided. Exceptional leaders must display exemplary negotiation and mediation skills. These skills enable a leader to navigate through conflict, understand the issues and come to a resolution based on compromise and respect for all.

3.???? Exemplary Communication Skills –

Both verbal and nonverbal communication skills are essential to becoming a great leader. Articulating strategies clearly and concisely in a fashion that respects the skill level of the individuals you are addressing is essential. Making strategies complicated is not a sign of intelligence. It very often points to the “lack of understanding” of what actually works in the real world. Keep in mind, if someone is seasoned in operational excellence activities, they may not fully appreciate various sales concepts or strategies and vice versa. It is for this reason that you must communicate clearly and most importantly, know your audience.? ?

?4.???? Cultural Awareness & Sensitivity –

A great leader respects and makes every attempt to appreciate the cultural differences, customs and social expectations of their team and clients. Failure to do this can come across as disrespectful to those you are directing or working with. As a leader you must do your homework and educate yourself on various cultural differences and behaviors prior to having sensitive conversations. This will allow you to establish meaningful connections throughout your career.

?5.???? Exemplary Critical Thinking Skills –

In order to stay one step ahead of potential problems, a great leader must fully understand the industry landscape and potential issues or obstacles before they present themselves. In order to do this, you must be able to assess complex issues and create practical solutions in advance, even if these solutions are never actually required. Remember, portions of these solutions may come in handy for other issues that do, over time, present themselves.

In Closing...

As you can see, possessing some of the traits of a great diplomat compliment traits necessary to being a great leader. I hope you found this short article useful and eye-opening. Please feel free to share it with friends, family members or colleagues that you believe will find it useful.

?As always, thank you.? I wish you all the very best as you navigate through the often-turbulent waters of your career! Remember, experience is useless if you don’t share it. -MC ?????
