2020 saw the rise of online training.?
With everyone stuck at home, or reduced numbers of staff allowed on site, and independent trainers not allowed to come directly to their clients, many people opted to move their training virtual.?
And for many this is still a valid option that they are looking at implementing more widely across their company.?
Whether it’s to teach new hire’s about job expectations, or creating online modules for routine safety training that needs updating every 12 months.?
But how do we create successful online training modules for our teams??
I’ve got my top tips below to help make sure that your training helps make your teams safe, rather than just bored.
- Plan Your Content - Make sure that the content you have planned for the course makes sense in the order you want to deliver it. If you just turn the camera on and hope for the best you’ll likely miss important steps in processes or end up needing to re-record later when you get the feedback that students or staff? don’t understand the course.?
- Focus On The Outcome - What do you want them to learn? Is the content leading them to that outcome or do you need to adjust to make sure the outcomes are reached??
- Think About The Student - Who is this course aimed at? What prior knowledge do they have? If they have no prior knowledge what terms or language might they have a hard time understanding? These are all things to consider when thinking about how to create an online custom course.?
- Provide Context - Let the learners know why this training exists, and why it’s important for them to know. The information won’t make much sense if the correct context isn’t provided.
- Is There A Compliance Need??- If the training being provided needs to meet set company standards, or regulatory requirements then you may need to seek the help of an RTO to make sure that the training provided is compliant.?
- Who Else Needs To Be Involved? - A natural thought after step 5, where we look at what compliance needs to be met, is also to think about how else needs to be involved. How are you going to manage all the people that need to be involved. Not just in the creation of the content, but the rollout of the course as well.?
- Practical Or Theoretical?? - Or maybe even both. If there are practical elements are they also going to be accessible online or will you need to track people’s completion of practical elements? If it’s entirely theoretical how are you planning to test competencies??
- How Is It Running??- Even though the course is online you need to think about where and how you are hosting the content. Is it only accessible internally within your business or will you be using a third party hosting service??
- Who Can You Show It To??- Who can you use to beta-test this process? Oftentimes we need to take a few attempts before we nail a course so having someone who you can test it with is a great idea.?
- How Much Time Is Required? - Humans only have a finite amount of time they can spend focusing at one time, so you need to think about how you space out the sessions. Will they be self-regulated so learners can complete them at any time within a given timeframe or will you roll out modules slowly and only allow them to move on once 1 module is completed? Thinking about the learning curve required will also help you decide if one module might be too big or too simple.
These are our top 10 tips for things to consider when creating custom courses for your staff or trainees.?
