Training reduces the risk of accidents

Simulation training reduces the risk of marine accidents. Owners that say it is too expensive to invest in crew training should consider the costs of an accident. These can add up to billions of dollars and ruin reputations – just ask BP or Costa Cruises.

The benefits of training ? through a blend of simulation, e-learning and onboard mentoring are numerous. It improves seafarer competence, adds professionalism… and reduces the risk of groundings and ship collisions.

In my six years as editor of Marine Electronics & Communications, there have been many people highlighting these benefits. This week it was the turn of Braemar, incorporating The Salvage Association.

Regional director Graeme Temple told delegates at the annual International Shipowning and Shipmanagement Summit in Singapore that training can prevent marine casualties because of human error.

It all Begins with making a training strategy for the Company defining the goals to be achieved through the training. This way it will be easier to identify the best suitable courses and training providers. Such a strategy should include education of the shore based staff (HR, superintendents, DPA, etc.) to keep them up to date on new technology, new training platforms and training needs and it should also incorporate regular drills on the bridge on how to deal with critical system failures to make it a routine, when the INS turns Black and the ECDIS is out of order. Howevere, the best thing about training is that it is not only improving safety, but it is often improving use of the equipment, more efficient bridge operation and work satisfaction to the crew too.
