Training Programs: The Good, The Bad, and Completion Rates

In the ever-evolving landscape of business and innovation, the importance of effective training programs cannot be overstated. This was the crux of the discussion at the recent roundtable session hosted by PBN Edu community. Led by the covener, Bola L. , the session brought together some of the sharpest minds in the industry to delve into the world of training programs, dissecting the good, the bad, and the elusive completion rates.

Our esteemed speakers included Ashley Immanuel , Co-founder/COO at Semicolon; Rachael Onoja , Head of Operations at AltSchool Africa; Oluwaferanmi Owolabi , Head of Purple Academy at Wema Bank Plc; and Deji Macaulay M.CIoD , Managing Director at Truthware Solutions. Their collective wisdom shed light on the intricacies of training programs, revealing some intriguing insights and challenges that often go unnoticed.

Training is all about empowerment, and it takes many forms. Whether it's technical, non-technical, or peer training, the goal is to provide individuals with the skills they need to excel and advance in their careers. It's a deliberate intervention to facilitate learning, driven by precise objectives. As emphasised in the session, training begins with a journey that leads to achieving specific goals.

One of the significant challenges discussed was the misperception of training. It's not a magic wand that can cure all ills in a flash. Often, organisations have misplaced objectives, expecting unrealistic results from their training programs. The key to success starts with a clear understanding of what you aim to achieve. A well-defined goal is a foundation upon which practical training is built.

The conversation also delved into the crucial issue of return on investment (ROI) and return on expectations (ROE). Before investing in training, it's vital to have a crystal-clear picture of the desired outcomes. ROI isn't just about monetary gains; it's about meeting people, building something, and, in some cases, making it open source to benefit a larger community. The true impact of training can extend far beyond financial returns.

Completion rates in training programs were another hot topic. In corporate settings, they can be influenced by various factors, including motivation and the quality of the training content. Completion rates may serve as a performance metric in some technical training, but the focus shifts to the impact on organisational culture for behavioural training.

Regarding investments in training, organisations must meticulously consider their objectives and the expectations of both learners and those underwriting the cost. To enhance the efficacy of existing resources, some businesses incorporate training into key performance indicators or certification programs to motivate their workforce.

The speakers voiced their frustration regarding the prevalence of misplaced objectives, the need for more structured frameworks, and the absence of creativity within training initiatives. These elements constitute the negative aspects that can impede the success of training programs. It is incumbent upon organisations to approach training with a well-conceived plan, clearly defined objectives, and a focus on the specific skills or behaviours they aim to cultivate.
