Training-One of the biggest safety mistakes your company can make:
If you have found your self scrambling to get your workers an OSHA 10, OSHA 30, or HAZWOPER course then you’re not alone! The fact that you are trying to help your employees acquire more knowledge in the field of safety & health will 1) Create a long-time safety culture and 2) Create and add more value to your company.
Beware of some dangers.
1) Not all trainers are teachers. Remember if you are an intelligent person you can easily pass the OSHA course and have someone lie on your “years of experience”. I have listened to people over common conversation and they seem to speak & conduct themselves well. However, once in front of 10 people they had difficulty relaying the specific message.
2) Don’t waste your time. Think of the number of hours it takes to get just 10 different people into a 10-hour course. The time they will be missing from an important assignment.
3) Don’t waste your money. Think of the amount of money spent getting everyone through the 10-hour safety course and the office administration that assisted on that, is your only concern to acquire a certificate or did you desire more?.
4) Know your trainer. Think of the time and energy that goes into interviewing a potential employee for an average position and compare this with the person that will shape the minds of your employees for 10 hours. How much do you know about them?
5) Experience. What do they posses as a trainer, teacher, worker and finally in the specific field of topic?
Remember if your company needs a safety, health or job skills course, take the time to do your homework not on the company but more importantly the actual person providing the teaching.
Think about what you yourself would accomplish as an owner if you could spend 10 or more hours teaching your employees? Demand a highly skilled person with teaching skills that can reach the heart, or your workers will tune them out within the first 10 minutes.
Finally, when the course is over, always take the time to complete the trainer evaluation sheet and ask if you can have copies. The evaluation sheets help give valuable feedback to the companies, so that they may place the trainers in the right course.
