Training Common Sense . . .

What Are the Most Important Skills to Teach the People who Buy Your Franchise??

This is for certain . . .

When you sell franchises to new owners, you need to train them.

That might seem like an obvious observation that no one would overlook. But in my experience, it isn’t. With surprising frequency, franchise companies cut corners on the training they give to new owners.

And if you do that or assume that any kind of training will do, you are accepting the reality that those owners . . .

·??????Will perform at a substandard level

·??????Will underperform and drag down the success of your entire franchise company

·??????Could even cause your entire franchise company to fail

What Should You Teach Your New Owners?

There are some obvious answers to that question. You should make sure they have an up-to-date knowledge of the products and services they will sell. You should also provide training that delves into the topics that your franchise handbook explains, including and especially how to use your systems and vendors.

But there are other skills you should train too, including . . .

  • ·??????Business management - Franchise owners need to have a good understanding of business management principles, including budgeting, accounting, sales, marketing, and customer service. They should also know how to set goals, track performance, and adjust their strategies based on data.
  • ·??????Leadership - Franchise owners need to be strong leaders who can motivate and manage their employees effectively. They should have good communication skills, be able to delegate tasks, and provide feedback and support to their team.
  • ·??????Operations management - Franchise owners need to be able to manage the day-to-day operations of their franchise, including inventory management, scheduling, and logistics. They should also be able to troubleshoot problems and find solutions quickly.
  • ·??????Adaptability - Franchise owners should be able to adapt to changes in the market, industry trends, and customer needs. They should also be able to adjust their strategies to fit the needs of their specific franchise.
  • ·??????Legal knowledge - Franchise owners should have a good understanding of the legal aspects of owning a franchise, including contracts, intellectual property, franchise regulations and employment law.
  • ·??????Customer Service - Franchise owners need to provide excellent customer service. They should be able to handle customer complaints, solve problems, and create a positive customer experience.
  • ·??????Marketing Skills – Every person who runs a business should know how to apply basic marketing skills, including running advertising and marketing campaigns, managing social media accounts, and more.

Your Brand Is Another Topic to Include in Your Training

If you want your new owners to succeed, don’t forget to talk about your franchise’s unique brand. After all, your franchise is unlike all others. It stands for certain values, products, and ways of doing business. So. . . train your owners about your brand!

Be sure to focus on the following questions . . .

  • ·??????Who were your founders? What made them unique, and exactly what motivated them to start your franchise company?
  • ·??????What is unique and different about the products and services you sell?
  • ·??????Are there any fables or company legends that tell the story of what makes you unique?
  • ·??????Can you show videos of customers who can provide case studies and testimonials about your products?
  • ·??????Are there any videos of your current franchise owners at work running their locations? If so, be sure to show them during your training.
  • ·??????Are the products or services you sell substantially better than what your competitors offer? Why?

So remember that if you want your overall franchise to prosper, be sure to train your franchise owners. It is the small secret to big franchise success.
