Training Camp Tactics: 3 Self-Care Ideas from NFL Training Camp

I still remember the first time I learned about ‘training camp.’ Fresh off my first ever summer camp event, I was reading about the upcoming start to NFL Training Camp in just a few weeks. My 4th grade mind exploded when it impressed its’ newly formed impressions of summer camp onto what pro football players must experience: overgrown men sleeping in twin sized bunks in military style dorms with 50+ bunks; daily wake up calls to the head coach’s favorite tunes played on the camp-wide speaker system; extended breaks for pool time where NFL players probably tosses footballs to each other as their fingers pruned up; eating way too many brownies at dinner just before evening team building activities.? For their sake, I’m glad NFL players experience something completely different at Training Camp than my summer camp experiences.?

NFL training camps are actually some of the most intense and grueling periods in a football player’s career. Amid the physical demands and mental challenges, self-care becomes critical for players to not only survive but thrive. NFL training camps are about physical conditioning, mental toughness, and strategic self-care. Players set themselves up for success in one of the most competitive environments imaginable with principles below that can also help us navigate challenges and achieve our goals with resilience and purpose. Here’s a look at some key practices observed during training camps that we can draw valuable lessons from.

1. Creating a Safe Space: The Quarterbacks' RV Sanctuary

Training camp can be a pressure cooker, where the stakes are high, and the stress is palpable. A few years ago, during the Cleveland Browns training camp, the quarterback group, led by Baker Mayfield, famously brought an RV to camp. This space was exclusive to the quarterbacks—a sanctuary where they could unwind, bond, and escape the chaos around them. The RV became a place where they could relax, share ideas, and build camaraderie away from the intensity of the practice field.

Practical Hack: Find or create your own "RV"—a physical or mental space where you can decompress and recharge.?

Creating a safe space is essential for managing stress and maintaining mental health, whether you’re on a football team or navigating life’s challenges. This could be a quiet room, a favorite spot in a park, or even a routine that helps you disconnect from stressors. Having a dedicated space for relaxation can help you stay grounded and better equipped to handle high-pressure situations.

2. Maintaining Focus: The Power of a Team Mantra

Every NFL team enters training camp with a sense of purpose, often encapsulated in a mantra or vision that guides them throughout the season. For instance, when Robert Saleh was setting direction as head coach of the New York Jets, he spoke on the value of competitors on the team. This mantra wasn’t just a catchy idea—it provided a focal point for the team, reminding them of their shared goals and values.

Even as coaches change and mantras evolve, the core idea remains the same: having a clear point of focus is crucial for navigating the journey ahead. It serves as a north star, keeping players aligned with their objectives and motivated through the highs and lows of the season.

Practical Hack: Establishing a personal mantra or point of focus can help you stay on track with your goals.

Whether studying for exams, working on a project, or pursuing a personal passion, you can choose a word, phrase, or concept that resonates with you and reflects your aspirations. Keep this focus at the forefront of your mind as you work toward your goals, allowing it to guide your actions and decisions.

3. Seizing Every Opportunity: The Rise of a Rookie Linebacker

Training camp is a critical time for players, especially rookies, to make their mark. In the 2022 season, rookie linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez of the Detroit Lions stood out by making the most of every opportunity. Despite being a sixth-round pick, Rodriguez’s dedication and effort during training camp, including his contributions on special teams, helped him earn a starting spot for the regular season.

Practical Hack: Practice gratitude to maximize opportunities in your own life.?

By appreciating small tasks and moments, you shift your focus to recognizing and valuing what you have. Take a moment each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for, even if it’s a minor achievement or a learning experience. This mindset helps you stay positive and seize opportunities that you might otherwise overlook, turning everyday moments into valuable growth experiences.
