Training AI to write for you

Chad, what’s my writing style?

An experiment that I did recently was to ask ChatGPT to extract my writing tone and style from my articles. The goal is clear: develop a framework for articles given some key information that I’d like to publish.

Current engagement methods

  1. Personalization: Customizing the AI to understand the user's preferred tone, style, and voice. This can involve setting up initial parameters or training the AI on specific datasets that reflect the desired writing style.
  2. Prompt Engineering: Providing the AI with detailed prompts and context to guide the content creation process. This includes specifying the tone, target audience, key points to cover, and any specific language preferences.
  3. Interactive Feedback: Engaging in a back-and-forth process with the AI, where the user reviews the generated content and provides feedback for refinement. This iterative approach helps in honing the output to better match the desired format.
  4. Templates and Frameworks: Using predefined templates or frameworks that outline the structure and tone of the article. The AI can then fill in the content within these parameters, ensuring consistency and adherence to the specified format.
  5. Tone Adjustment Tools: Utilizing built-in tools or third-party integrations that allow for real-time adjustment of the tone and style. These tools can help in fine-tuning the word choice, sentence structure, and overall flow to match the desired format.

So, why would you even want to do this?

  1. Consistency: Ensures that all articles maintain a uniform tone, style, and structure, which is particularly important for building a recognizable brand voice.
  2. Efficiency: Speeds up the content creation process by reducing the time spent on formatting and stylistic adjustments, allowing writers to focus more on the substance of their articles.
  3. Personalization: Allows the AI to generate content that closely matches the writer’s unique voice, making the output feel authentic and personalized.
  4. Scalability: Enables the production of a large volume of content without compromising on quality, which is beneficial for meeting high content demands.
  5. Quality Control: Helps in maintaining high standards of writing by adhering to predefined guidelines and frameworks, thus reducing the risk of errors or inconsistencies.
  6. Adaptability: Allows for easy adjustments and updates to the writing style as preferences evolve, ensuring that the content remains relevant and engaging.
  7. Focus on Creativity: Frees up time for writers to focus on creative aspects and deeper research, as the AI handles repetitive formatting tasks.
  8. Data-Driven Insights: Utilizes AI’s analytical capabilities to identify patterns and trends in successful articles, guiding improvements in future content.
  9. Enhanced Collaboration: Facilitates better collaboration between team members by providing a consistent framework that everyone can follow.
  10. Real-Time Adjustments: Offers the ability to make real-time changes to the writing style based on current trends or immediate feedback.

Prompt

ChatGPT, what is my writing tone? What’s my style of writing? How do I write articles? How do I like to publish articles? Please just summarize this for me, and then let’s develop a framework for you creating articles based on my writing tone. Here are some of my articles. Please extract a framework for creating new articles that follow my writing style.

ChatGPT 4o did a decent job of extracting a framework from my writing. Here is the response.

Conclusion

Ever since I can recall, my pet peeve has been and still is the verbosity of articles. My brain just doesn't have space for linguistic fluff floating around the internet, padding the facts or technical information that I need to easy access to. From high school, through university, and now in professional life, my preference has been for bullet form facts. AI allows me to focus on the important details and/or facts of my writing, and fills in the rest with fluff, padding and pretty pictures.

It is worth noting that this article does not follow the framework that AI extracted above - precisely because I want to add variation into new articles. In future, would the content be fluffed up by AI? Possibly. But, would the facts and key points be mine? Absolutely, and always.

I think it's a win-win. Do you agree?

If AI is adding "fluff, padding, and pretty pictures" to your writing (per the article linked), that sounds like it's making the situation worse, not better, at least as far as fluff and padding are concerned.

How will this impact the "tried and tested" format of scientific writing?

Wow. Very interesting. How will this impact the present notion of AI and ethics in scientific writing? Can a similar process be used to help learners at all levels achieve deep learning?
