Training 4 Influence book coming soon

Featuring analysis chapter by Dr Sarah Lewis

Training 4 Influence is a creative solution, a method of training that can transform any training session, adding golden threads that influence organisational outcomes, without costing the delegate or commissioner any more time or money than they are spending now.

This book is going to show you how, using our 4 step method and underlying principles, you can

 Transform your training

 Influence organisational outcomes

 Change lives

The methodology Training 4 Influence has been developed specifically to add value and to have an immediate operational impact in the criminal justice and social care sectors, despite policy change and austerity measures.

The pressure is on and services are being asked to deliver more for less. Training 4 Influence is a way of using training to do exactly that! This book will show you how to use the Training 4 Influence methodology and principles in a way that transforms your sessions.

The method ensures the training is delivered in a way that inspires, is relevant, enables learning and meets the training objectives. This ensures that our frontline workers are skilled, knowledgeable and qualified and that they walk out of Training 4 Influence sessions lamenting about how perfectly pitched the course content was and how their activities in their day job are going to be improved as a result of attending our training.

The underlying principles is where the magic happens. They ensure that delegates, who are frontline professionals, feel valued, have a person-centred approach and have the emotional resilience and motivation to deliver exceptional services to some of the most complex and vulnerable in our society.

The principles focus on rebuilding and reconnecting the delegate to their own mission and the mission of the organisation they are working for. Recognising that people are an organisation’s biggest asset if we want them to deliver services that change lives, we need to ensure they know they matter equally too. It isn’t just about a job, it’s a vocation, an opportunity, a privilege to work in the role.

A creative solution

We could have developed a training course on taking a values-based approach and building your emotional resilience but we didn’t. There are loads of short courses and longer qualifications that do that already and do it really well. The stark truth is that most frontline professionals don’t have the time or brain space for extra study or personal development. So what we have done is different. We are going to share with you a methodology that can be implemented into any training session, irrelevant of the subject.

Some training is mandated and regulated. Quality assurers, commissioners and sector leaders insist on it. This is why we developed Training 4 Influence to transform any session. So, if an organisation can only manage to provide mandatory sessions for their staff, our method will still have influence.

 How we developed the method

Faye and I were operational and strategic managers, working within criminal justice. We developed Taye Training to meet our service delivery needs. We started by delivering the training personally but demand soon grew, so we built a national team of operational experts to deliver courses to organisations where they have connected experience.

We analysed thousands of sessions to find out why Taye training received such phenomenal feedback. It was clear that people really valued the fact that the facilitators are operational experts and could connect the learning to the delegates organisation and job role. They expected all our materials to be high quality and based in best practise and legislation and loved that we presented the information with consideration to different learning styles. However, what did surprise us was that we were all consistently delivering the same underlying principles. So intrinsic to the way we deliver services, the principles were key to our training delivery. So that’s why these are consciously interweaved throughout all Training 4 Influence sessions.

The principles connect frontline professionals back to their ‘why’; why they chose to undertake a role in this sector when there are other jobs available that cause less stress and pay more. They recognise that each professional has their own home life and needs to have their emotional resilience topped up regularly, to enable them to continue positively delivering services. The principles consistently delivered influence and the values of professionals with their clients help them to avoid burnout and stay motivated. What’s not to love?!

Recently, after one of our training sessions, a delegate talked about our underlying principles. She referred to them as subliminal messages. I laughed out loud! But she has a point. The underlying principles are all about encouraging and influencing the culture in criminal justice and social care. They are about recognising the importance of people, staff members are not just a commodity and a client is not just a client. We are all people, there is no us and them. Just me and we, the more we connect groups, break down barriers and  value people, the more we will absolutely disrupt the generational cycle of harm, abuse and chaos. This will impact society, this will mean change.

I was a child born into the cycle, professionals helped me to change my life. I’m now living my best life, contributing to society and aiming to make a positive impact. My children will never experience the devastation I did. They already believe the world is full of possibilities and that they are loved beyond measure. Cycle ended.

 Who is this book for?

This book is for trainers and facilitators. You might work within an organisation and train internally or you may train as a consultant or have your own company. You may even be reading this as part of your induction to delivering with us at Taye. Either way, the only prerequisite is that you currently deliver training or would like to.

Predominately, we expect the people reading this book to be delivering training to professionals who work with children and adults who have complex needs, are vulnerable and/or experiencing multiple disadvantages.

If you’re reading this blog we guess you recognise the power that training can have. The difference it can make and how collectively together we can make a real difference in the sector. We are currently working hard so that leaders, commissioners and services recognise they can get a whole lot more for less by commissioning a Training 4 Influence accredited provider.

Imagine if we eliminated boring, unconnected, uninspiring training sessions. Imagine if everyone who ever delivered training to frontline professionals, the people perfectly positioned to change lives using the Training 4 Influence method – what a difference we could collectively make.

We could influence their values and approach, help them recognise their biases, build their emotional resilience, all whilst delivering expert, engaging, inspirational training. Not only will our training absolutely support the individuals working in the sector to feel valued but it will enable them to continue transforming lives.

This book has been written to introduce you to each element of Training 4 Influence. Firstly, we’ll take you step-by-step through the methodology and then we’ll look at the underlying principles. I’ll explain why each is of equal importance and it is when they are connected together that we see the magic happen.

So what is Training 4 influence?

 The Method

 * Delivered by an operational expert – trainers who have true operational experience with your client group can share experiences, connect the learning, motivate and inspire.

 * Tailored to your organisation – an understanding of your organisation and team enables a session to specifically meet your needs, including, where appropriate, your mission, policies and processes, your case examples and any complex staff dynamics.

 * Informed by legislation, guidance and best practice – the subject matter needs to be clear, the objectives robust and the session written to exceed industry quality standards.

 * Engaging and interactive – we all learn differently; different learning styles are catered for and accelerated learning methods are used to ensure that each delegate has their personal learning needs met.

This method may seem obvious but no other training qualification focuses specifically on how to ensure each element is achieved. On their own they make a difference but collectively they are gamechangers. In this book I will take you through each element of the method, explain the difference each element makes and why when all element are intertwined the magic happens.

 The underlying principles:

*Values-based decision-making – we all have a different frame of reference. This means our values are different which impacts our decision-making.

*Emotional resilience and burnout – emotional resilience is the ability to mentally or physically cope. It is important when working on the frontline in such complex roles that we assist professionals to build work-based emotional resilience and recognise burnout.

*Trauma informed approach – a trauma-informed approach begins with understanding the physical, social and emotional impact of trauma on an individual, as well as on the professionals who help them. This includes victim-centred practices.

 * Recognising Bias – we all have some conscious and some unconscious bias. Recognising them gives us the opportunity to mitigate and challenge.

The book functions as an explanation of our methods to help you understand why we do what we do and what our aspirations are. If you’re a trainer reading this, you can use the principles and learn from this book to increase the influence your training has or train to become a fully endorsed Training 4 Influence facilitator. Either way, the aim of Training for Influence is to:

*maximise opportunities for learning using an organisational and service-centred approach

*add real value to the organisation and individual delegates to provide a tangible return on investment

*help to re-motivate and refresh delegates.

This blueprint has been developed and honed in the criminal justice and social care statutory and charity sectors, as this is where my experience lies and where I identified a need for tailored training to help people working with complex needs. However, the blueprint can just as easily be applied to other sectors because the principles hold good for other types of training too. In fact, it’s my belief that this is the only way to really deliver training that properly meets the needs of any organisation or company.
