UK’s proactive approach to quality assurance

The international education sector in the UK has been continuously evolving in the past few years with focus on tackling some of the most important industry challenges and ensuring the highest standards of quality and best practices.?

One of the most important steps was the creation of the Agent Hub and the UK Agent and Counsellor Training, created in collaboration with sector experts and organized and delivered by the British Council. This training provides in-depth knowledge and awareness of the UK as a study destination and includes the signing of the National Code of Ethical Practice for Education Agents, another joint effort by multiple organizations including BUILA to set the expectations for recruitment to the UK.?

All these efforts were combined in what is called the Agent Quality Framework (AQF) a range of guidance and quality assurance tools designed to enhance the partnership between the UK education sector and agents and counsellors and to recognise and share best practices.?

This important initiative was later followed by the UK International Education Sector’s Pledge and signed by over 100 UK Higher Education Institutions, demonstrating their commitment to the AQF and their dedication to quality assurance in agent management practices.

While all these efforts have shown commitment and created a framework, a recent Government review of the Graduate Route, commonly known as the MAC Review, highlighted the challenges of a voluntary compliance system. The review pointed out that while the AQF is a positive step, the voluntary nature of the code may not be sufficient to curb poor practices.?

In summary, as of the date of this article, it is likely that the government will adopt the Agent Quality Framework initiative including the UK Agent and Counsellor Training but will likely demand Higher Education Institutions to provide concrete evidence of their agent management practices and training compliance.
