Trainers or Coaches: Not Vendors, They're the Consultant Superheroes!

In the bustling marketplace of professional development, where jargon flies as fast as superheroes in capes, there's a group of unsung heroes: trainers and coaches. But wait, before you shrug them off as vendors, let me tell you why they're more akin to consultants than you might think.
Vendors ply their trade, connecting buyers with goods in bustling marketplaces. On the other hand, freelance consultants provide invaluable training and coaching services. Categorizing consultants as vendors is a misnomer.
During a recent coaching session, a Learning and Development Head shared a frustrating experience. She struggled to secure the right individual to deliver training because an experienced coach insisted on payment upfront or a contractual agreement guaranteeing prompt payment. Reflecting on the consultant's stance, she realized the distinction between vendors and consultants. Consequently, we collaborated to accommodate consultant expenses within the L&D budget and implemented HR protocols to ensure prompt payment. This solution fostered a lasting bond between the consultant and the company.
Flexibility is key in understanding consultant needs. It's disheartening to witness vendors offering meager compensation, as low as 20k, for a full day's training provided by experienced consultants. This practice undermines the dedication and expertise these professionals have accumulated over years of hard work, investment, and experience.
Why must you honor their commitment and contributions?
1. They're Like Personal Trainers for Your Professional Muscles
Imagine hiring a personal trainer. They don't just hand you a gym membership and say, "Good luck!" No, they assess your strengths and weaknesses, tailor exercises to your needs, and cheer you on when you're ready to give up. Trainers and coaches do the same for your professional skills. They don't just dump information on you; they craft personalized plans to help you level up.
2. They're Your GPS in the Wilderness of Self-Improvement
Ever felt lost in the maze of self-improvement? Trainers and coaches are like your trusty GPS, guiding you through the twists and turns of your career journey. They help you navigate tricky situations, avoid dead ends, and discover new paths you never knew existed.
As business consultant Whitney Johnson puts it, "A coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear, who has you see what you don't want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be." They're not just there to pat you on the back; they're there to challenge you to be better.
3. They're the Gandalfs of the Business World
You know Gandalf from "The Lord of the Rings"? Trainers and coaches are a bit like him. They might not have a staff or a flowing robe (though some might!), but they do wield wisdom and experience to help you conquer your own Mount Doom. They've seen the pitfalls and the victories before, and they're here to share their hard-earned knowledge with you.
4. They're Not Just Telling Jokes, They're Breaking the Ice
Humor is a powerful tool in any consultant's arsenal. Trainers and coaches know this well. They don't just spout facts and figures; they sprinkle in a healthy dose of humor to keep things lively and engaging. After all, who wants to sit through a dry PowerPoint presentation when you could be laughing and learning at the same time?
As the legendary motivational speaker Zig Ziglar once said, "You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great." Trainers and coaches are there to help you take that first step, whether it's with a gentle nudge or a swift kick in the pants (metaphorically speaking, of course).
So, the next time you think of trainers or coaches, don't just think of them as vendors peddling their wares. Think of them as consultants, mentors, and allies on your journey to professional greatness. Who knows, with their guidance, you might just become the superhero of your own career story.

6 个月Rightly said! Just because there isn't a space to fit them into, you cannot slot them as vendors. Coaches, trainers and mentors are not peddlers for products. They transform your lives. Love this piece. Must read!!!
