Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to.

Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to.

The best workers don't fit into a mold.

The best workers don't tell you what you want to hear, they tell you what you need to hear.

  • Adopt this attitude and you could have an employee that could stop you from going over a cliff and making a horrible decision you never saw coming.
  • They'll stop you from rolling out an idea that could cost your company millions.
  • They could give you customer insight that could help 10x your sales.
  • A suggestion from an employee could open your eyes to a new product or service or way of delivering excellence to your customers you never considered before.

No matter how smart, experienced or focused you are as a leader, owner or executive - you'll never have all the answers.

“Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.”
- Richard Branson

Your team is there because they most likely want to be. They want to succeed and if you've done a good job of being a servant leader, and supporting them.... they'll want you to succeed as well.

Too many companies hire the smartest and then micro manage, ignore their opinions, crack the whip.

Hire the smartest people.

Give them training.

Give them support.

Give them opportunity.

Give them coaching.

Give them guidance.

Give them tools.

Give them freedom and trust to do what you hired them to do.

They'll help you succeed in ways you never thought possible.

? Agree? Disagree?

Splendid treatise, motivation, free will follow intensive training and orientation. What type of orientation? Orientation on company philosophy, orientation on ethics and procedures, then enactment of management by exception not management by objectives!!! When you manage by objectives, especially smart employees, then you incubate talents that would have been released when the smarts employees are free to achieve results unfettered, so I agree with you Scott Douglas.
