"Time spent exercising is much less than going to a gym by myself, but the results are better"
Said Johan, 1 of my private clients who's working with me 1-to-1.
Just proud of his achievement and to be witnessing his transformation along the way. He's a digital entrepreneur who like most of us, who struggles with time and sick of methods that didn't work.
I first met Johan in a café with my girlfriend, to discuss digital marketing. As we were talking about digital marketing, our conversation went towards talking about health & fitness. Johan was talking about how active he was back in the day and how he needed to get his health back on track. After 2 hours of discussion on digital marketing, we exchanged contacts, and Johan said he will be in contact with me soon. Fast forward 2 months, he contacted me and asked to meet up for a consultation on how am I going to help him on getting his health back on track.
The reason why he wanted to engage me was that he needed accountability & support mechanism throughout his fitness routine as he doesn’t wish to spend the mental effort to research for hours and was willing to invest in a personal trainer to help design a sustainable training routine for him without him wasting hours trying to design something that works for him.
After discussing what his goals were, I designed a program that fit into his existing work & life routine as well as his diet, sleep & health condition.
And his goal was to look like his favorite superhero, your friendly neighborhood, Spiderman.
To look and move like Spidey, we first have to access his muscle imbalances.
What I did with Johan initially for the first 4 weeks cycle, was take him through a Structural Balance training session.
Why Structural Balance?
Structural Balance is an evaluation system that looks at strength ratios between muscle groups to ensure optimal performance and injury prevention. As a coach, Structural Balance Assessments enable me to use the information to individualize the training program to achieve useful results.
This is what I would normally use with new clients, as I needed the information to craft the program for the next phase.
I still don’t get it…..
Well, here’s another explanation,
The most absurd example is when we look at the typical commercial gym, where we often see many guys focusing on their “beach muscles.”?Their exercise selection is often limited to the muscle they can see in the mirror - bench press and bicep curls.?The overtraining of the anterior chain often leads to an imbalance that can cause frustration, pain, and injury.
This can also be seen in gymnastics when athlete focuses on pushing exercises like planche, dips, and handstand push-ups while neglecting pulling exercises like pull-ups.?This is a recipe for creating a structural imbalance in strength and flexibility that will induce shoulder pain.
Nutrition
For Johan’s nutrition, it was a little tricky as he was getting his daily meals from a local coffee shop and normally, he would be getting them from the economy rice stall. (Economic rice is a type of food or food stall serving many dishes accompanied by rice, commonly found in hawker centers, street vendors, or food courts in Asian countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, etc)
I was ok with him having those as he did not have a kitchen to cook in. So, we got to work with what was easy for him at the time. But I needed him to increase his protein intake, have moderate carbs & more vegetables. I also needed him to avoid any deep-fried food, food with heavy gravy or sweet sauces & processed meat.
The reason why I wanted to increase his protein intake and not get rid of carbs is that protein is the foundation of muscle gain. This essential component is a necessity for all of your body’s daily functions. Along with protein, carbs act as the body’s source of fuel. As the primary component in gaining energy, and preventing muscle weakness and degradation, complex carbs should be a large daily element of everyone’s nutritional intake.
PROTEIN
Protein and amino acids basically constitute the building blocks of the muscle tissue in your body.?If your muscles are a house, protein is the bricks. The amino acids that make up protein are the building blocks of muscle. Your body can manufacture many of those amino acids, but nine are known as essential amino acids (EAA) because they can’t be made in the body. Instead, you have to consume EAAs from food sources like meat, beans, nuts, and soy. A diet containing mixed amino acids can help maximize muscle protein synthesis.
CARBOHYDRATE
If protein is so essential to muscle growth, why put an emphasis on carbs? Well, carbohydrates don’t get enough credit when it comes to the important roles they play in muscle gains.

For one, carbohydrates help replace glycogen and aids in enhancing the role of insulin when it comes to transporting nutrients into the cells, including your muscles. Combining protein and carbs also has the added advantage of limiting post-exercise breakdown and promoting growth.
Think about it, building anything takes a lot of time, energy, and resources. Building muscle is no different. The body requires a lot of energy to power through workouts that result in bigger, stronger muscles. Where does the body get most of that energy? Usually from carbs.
There are two types of carbohydrates: simple carbs and complex carbs.
Simple carbs are a quick, sporadic source of energy, while complex carbs are a good source of steady energy.
Complex carbs may not be as readily available for immediate energy as simple carbs are, but they’re more efficient and healthier. Complex carbs provide sustainable energy, which means the energy is constant and there’s no “crash” like with simple carbs.
Results?
After 5 months, Johan did not just improve his physique, he started to build better mental resiliency as I tend to give him monthly challenges. He is also better equipped with knowledge on how to make better food choices, feeling more confident, & his sleep was improving. He went from looking like Kingpin to 85% Spidey! His journey is far from over, we will continue to work until he starts looking like the ULTIMATE version of Spiderman, TOM HOLLAND.
