Trailing Spouses in Singapore: Exploring Immigration Options and Opportunities

Trailing Spouses in Singapore: Exploring Immigration Options and Opportunities

1. Dependant’s Pass (DP)

The Dependant’s Pass (DP) is the most common visa option for trailing spouses. It allows spouses and children of Employment Pass, S Pass, or One Pass holders to live in Singapore. However, a DP does not automatically grant the right to work.

2. Letter of Consent (LOC)

Trailing spouses holding a DP can apply for a Letter of Consent (LOC) to work in Singapore if they meet certain criteria. The LOC is tied to their DP and allows them to work legally in Singapore. However, the eligibility for an LOC has changed:

? Business Owners: DP holders can apply for an LOC if they own a business, such as a sole proprietorship.

? One Pass Sponsored DP Holders: DP holders sponsored by a One Pass holder can apply for an LOC for employment.

3. Work Passes

Trailing spouses can apply for work passes such as the Employment Pass (EP) or S Pass if they are offered a job in Singapore. This process requires the employer to apply for the appropriate work pass on behalf of the spouse, meeting the qualifying criteria.

4. Special Work Permit for DP Holders

A unique option available for DP holders is the ability to apply for a Work Permit under the DP category if the salary offered does not meet the qualifying criteria for an EP or S Pass. This is subject to quota requirements for the hiring company. DP holders who get a Work Permit:

? Must hold both the DP and Work Permit. The Work Permit’s validity period will be tied to that of the DP.

? Can be of all nationalities/citizenships (i.e., source requirements are waived).

? Are not subject to the six-monthly medical examination, security bond, or pregnancy restrictions.

? Do not need medical insurance from their employers if they are already covered under a medical insurance plan that meets MOM’s prevailing minimum mandatory insurance coverage requirement.

5. Volunteer Activities

DP holders do not need to obtain a work pass to participate in volunteer activities if

? No payment is involved.

? The activities are for a charitable purpose.

Navigating Employment Opportunities

1. Leveraging Professional Skills

Many trailing spouses are highly skilled professionals who face challenges in continuing their careers due to visa restrictions or market conditions. Leveraging professional networks, online platforms like LinkedIn, and recruitment agencies specializing in expatriate placements can help trailing spouses find suitable employment opportunities in Singapore.

2. Entrepreneurship and Freelancing

Singapore offers a supportive environment for entrepreneurship and freelancing. Trailing spouses with business acumen or specialized skills can consider starting their own businesses or offering freelance services. The EntrePass is a visa designed for foreign entrepreneurs who wish to start and operate a business with an innovative and/or tech element in Singapore, providing an alternative pathway for trailing spouses with entrepreneurial aspirations.

3. Volunteering and Community Engagement

For those not immediately seeking employment, volunteering offers a meaningful way to engage with the community, build networks, and gain local experience. Singapore has numerous non-profit organizations and community groups where trailing spouses can contribute their skills and make a positive impact.

Adapting to Life in Singapore

1. Cultural Integration

Adapting to a new country can be challenging, and cultural integration is key to a fulfilling expatriate experience. Trailing spouses can benefit from cultural orientation programs, language classes, and social clubs that provide insights into Singapore’s diverse culture and opportunities to meet new people.

2. Support Networks

Building a support network is essential for trailing spouses. Expatriate communities, support groups, and social clubs offer a platform to share experiences, seek advice, and form friendships.
