Trailblazing Women in Steel: Meet Nucor’s Industry Leaders

Get to know three women shaping the future of innovation, technology and sustainability at Nucor.

?As the manufacturing industry continues to evolve, Nucor relies on a strong team of leaders to help the company succeed. Today, we shine a spotlight on three extraordinary women who are breaking barriers and setting new standards in the industry. Just like the Society of Women Engineers, these women are inspiring the next generation of female engineers and innovators. Let's meet Tabitha, Sushma, and Amari, and discover how their remarkable contributions are shaping the future of steel.

Tabitha: Leading Innovation

As a leader in innovation, Nucor has consistently set the tone for what is possible in the steel and manufacturing industries. With the leadership of industry trailblazers like Tabitha, former engineer and General Manager of Energy Solutions and Brand & Marketing, Nucor continues to challenge limits through its vertically integrated business model, which allows for greater control over every stage of production, from raw materials to finished products. This model not only streamlines operations but also enables Nucor to maximize recycling efforts, making it the largest recycler in North America. “Nucor has consistently led the steel industry through our pioneering use of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology, allowing us to produce steel more efficiently and sustainably,” Tabitha notes. “Our commitment to recycling not only sets us apart, but it drives continuous innovation in our steelmaking processes.” ?Through ongoing innovation and a commitment to sustainable practices, Nucor is setting new industry standards while ensuring its customers receive the highest quality products.

Sushma: Driving Technological Advancements

Sushma's expertise as the President of Nucor Business Technology is transforming Nucor's operations. Teammates under her guidance are making significant strides in automation, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. Aside from her work in technology, she is an advocate and mentor for women in metal manufacturing roles, where they currently only represent 17 percent of the workforce. Recently, Sushma spoke at the AIST Women in Steel Conference about the challenges she has faced being a woman in this industry. “It’s okay to work through the adversity of not knowing what to do,” Sushma said. Leaders like Sushma are proving that it isn’t always about having the answers, it’s about having the entrepreneurial spirit to find them and caring for those you work with.

Amari: Championing Sustainability

Amari is a key figure in Nucor's commitment to sustainability. As the Manager of Corporate Sustainability, Amari is actively involved in Nucor’s dedication to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Amari's efforts in promoting green steel and supporting women in engineering through mentorship programs and involvement with organizations like the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) are commendable. Amari emphasizes, "At Nucor, our commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in our identity as the largest recycler in North America. Through our vertical integration, we are not only producing low-emission steel but also paving the way toward our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. Together, we are creating a greener future for generations to come.”

These three leaders exemplify Nucor's values of innovation, technological advancement, and sustainability. Their contributions not only drive the company's success but inspire the next generation of female leaders.

?At Nucor, every team member, regardless of their position, embodies a spirit of leadership and entrepreneurship, always looking out for one another and encouraging collaboration. This collective mindset fosters a culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute ideas and drive positive change. We encourage all female leaders to connect, support, and empower each other, fostering a community of strength and inspiration. Organizations like the Society of Women Engineers play a crucial role in this mission, providing a platform for women to share their experiences, mentor one another, and continue breaking barriers in the engineering field.
