TRAI Chairman Predicts Surge in 5G Use Cases Across Industries

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Chairman, AK Lahoti, highlighted the growing use cases of 5G technology, initially focusing on enhanced mobile broadband and fixed wireless access. Speaking at the ETTelecom 5G Industries Innovation Summit 2024, he emphasized the role of startups, entrepreneurs, and application providers in driving innovation across sectors like smart cities, connected healthcare, and smart industries. To support these developments, TRAI has recommended the formation of digital cells within various ministries and departments, tasked with developing relevant 5G use cases in collaboration with industry stakeholders.

Lahoti also discussed government initiatives to boost 5G adoption, including the establishment of 100 5G use case labs in educational institutions, with the government covering the majority of capital and operational expenses. The Chairman mentioned the potential of new technologies like the terahertz spectrum and Reduced Capability technology, which will drive cost-efficient, energy-optimized solutions, particularly for mid-tier applications. These efforts, combined with TRAI's new experimental authorization regime, will contribute to the Make in India initiative and advance the country's 5G capabilities.
