Tragic Loss of iconic Notre Dame - A surprise ?

It's no surprise that millions across the globe are heartbroken and devastated at the loss of this beautiful structure. I can remember myself visiting Notre Dame and being awestruck by its beauty, its very being.
What is more tragic is how predictable and preventable this loss is.
Predictable because history has shown how many heritage buildings will be lost to fire over a period of time, many have been rebuilt, some to their former glory, some not quite, and some not at all.
Preventable because the fire protection industry and fire service professionals for years have been advising the custodians of these treasures to take action to install fire protection systems that would see these tragedies minimised or prevented altogether.
I hope this can be a call to action to others around the world that can learn from this and take action to protect their treasures for future generations.

5 年Given the current technology in both detection and supression, buildings like this can be fitted with a bespoke system that fits with the asthetic of the building. A combination of early detection (aspirated smoke detection has many different forms now) along with low flow water mist to minimise water damage could be just the ticket. Especially if also installed alongside traditional fire sprinklers and detection.

5 年Installing fire protection in structures such as Notre dame would be a mammoth undertaking? It had fire warning systems but it took 23 minutes to discover the origin. I can only imagine the difficulty in running fire suppression.
