Traffic Officer Learnerships are very popular as a way to become a qualified traffic official in South Africa. With one of the world's worst safety records on the road the work of traffic officials is sorely needed in our country.

The Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) are in charge of overseeing leadership in skills development and setting up relevant workplace qualifications. The government introduced them to aid skill-builders and better prepare individuals for the labour market.

The practical component involves hands-on, practical learning under the supervision of a mentor. To graduate from a learnership, you must complete an education and training provider's theoretical and workplace component. Candidates must be open to moving and traveling if necessary. The majority of the training candidates will receive will be in line with the requirements for Traffic Officers as laid out by the SAQA Registered Qualification programme.

Road traffic law enforcement is one of the primary activities of the traffic department and in metro areas there is a traffic law enforcement division within each municipal traffic department.

Other law enforcement activities include the issuing of vehicle licences, but not the driving license as this is done nationally. Traffic officers will however be tasked with checking that drivers in their location have a valid driving licence.?
