If after talking with the student the behavior continued, I would contact parents to explain what was happening in the classroom. I’d make a note to myself to call back in two weeks. Some of the two week calls were brainstorming calls having parents and guardians help me figure out what might work. The rest were congratulation calls. One call I remember was a call back to “mom” telling her how much her son had improved and how impressed I was. Mom started crying: she told me she had calls all the time from teachers but this was the first positive call she had ever received. She said it was her birthday and the call was the best present ever. Her son was great after that and word got out that I made follow-up calls. Fewer problems.
