Tradeshow Survival Tips

As I prepare for the umpteenth tradeshow of my career, I've seen inquiries from first-time attendees about what to bring, what to expect, and how to get the most out of their experience. Here are some tips I've come up with and some that have been shared with me by other seasoned professionals that will help you to have an excellent time at your next big event:
Must-haves:
- Layers: meeting rooms are cooled down to arctic temperatures no matter what it's like outside
- Chargers: I have a slimmer portable ones for my laptop and phone, but always have them in my carry on and in my bag on the tradeshow floor
- Comfortable shoes: function over fashion, my friends. You'll put in a lot of miles!
- Tradeshow app: Download it before you leave, and make sure it works. Most shows don't print out an agenda anymore so you'll rely on this to navigate the event AND (in most apps) to communicate with potential customers.
- Business Cards: this is the number one thing people forget at home!
Pro Tips:
- Less is more: Don't pack what you can't comfortably get through the airport or hotel lobby - ship your promotional items to the hotel ahead of time to avoid having extra bags that you won't need during travel.
- Do your homework: know who will be before you go so you can maximize your schedule. Try to make plans ahead of time with anyone who you want to connect with so you don't run the risk of missing them.
- Stay hydrated: all the forced air in meeting rooms (and endless coffee carafes) will catch up with you quickly. Drink lots of water, and definitely bring chapstick with you!
- Load your contacts: Having your computer is great, but not always convenient if you need to make a quick phone call. Be sure you have the contact info in your phone of anyone you are traveling with, or planning to see so that you can always find it quickly.
- Don't forget self-care: Tradeshows can cause major burnout, so be sure you are getting a good night's sleep, and maybe even making time to get into the hotel's gym for a quick workout to get the endorphins up and ensure that you go home rested and feeling good inside and out.
