Lets Make Canada Great Again!
On February 1, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, with Canadian energy products facing a reduced 10% tariff. These measures are set to take effect on February 4, 2025. The tariffs have been widely criticized as violations of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which was enacted into U.S. law on January 29, 2020, by President Trump. And the Trade War begins.
Trump's new tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, including a 10% tariff on Canadian energy, violates the CUSMA trade deal. In response, Canada is imposing 25% tariffs on C$30 billion in U.S. goods, with potential for more. Canada will also raise breach with the International Trade Administration, which unfortunately is overseen by the US.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the tariffs “mutually destructive,” highlighting Canada's economic contributions to the U.S. Trade experts warn of economic downturns and job losses. The situation is escalating, with Canada and Mexico preparing further retaliation.
Cutting to the core.? Trump is after Canada’s wealth of resources.? As per Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, “We note the reduced 10% tariff for Canadian energy which is partially a recognition of the advocacy undertaken by our Government and industry to the U.S. Administration pointing out the substantial wealth created in the U.S. by American companies and tens of thousands of American workers that upgrade and refine approximately $100 billion of Canadian crude into $300 billion of product sold all over the world by those same U.S. companies.
?It is also worth noting that if oil and gas exports are excluded, the United States actually sells more to Canada than Canada sells to the U.S.. As I’ve stated to every American policymaker I’ve met with these past months, Canada buys more from the U.S. than any country on earth - more than U.K., France, Germany, Italy and Vietnam combined. There is, therefore, no economic justification for tariffs imposed on any Canadian”.
Summary, the US purchases approx $100 billion in Canadian crude oil, refines it, adding value of $200 billion, then sells it back to other countries including Canada, as gasoline, diesel and other petrolium based products, for $300 billion Its time for Canada, for Albert to refine our crude oil.
