Week One ATP & WTA Preview

With the 2023 tennis season just around the corner lets have a look at the opening month where we travel down under, bar one ATP tournament that’s in Pune, India. The month as always ends with the first Slam of the season in Melbourne.

Historically the courts play fast in January which means a certain type of player does well (the big serving counterpuncher), while pushers with limited reaction speed are at a disadvantage. Form on fast courts is essential, so we look for players who do well in January or at events such as Cincinnati, Washington, Paris, Shanghai and the ATP Tour Finals.

Week One

There is a new team event called the United Cup, this is nothing more than a glorified exhibition and will be ignored, we shall concentrate on the official ATP & WTA events.

ATP Adelaide is a 250 with a Masters line-up. Djokovic, Medvedev, Auger-Aliassime, Rublev, Sinner & Rune will all begin their seasons here and all six have the game style to make an impact at the end of the month.

The other ATP event in the opening week is ATP Pune, which again is a 250 but has a much weaker field than Adelaide. Look for Cilic, Russuvuori & Brooksby to potentially go well here.

Over on the WTA we have a 500 event in Adelaide and this is the first of back to back events here, the field is strong with Jabeur, Sabalenka, Kasatkina & Kudermetova representing the top 10 alongside Rybakina, Kontaveit, Pliskova, Andreescu, Vondrousova, Collins & Anisimova. Personally, I think the winner will come from the second list of names, Rybakina, Vondrousova, Collins & Anisimova in particular all have good form early in the season.

The week rounds up with WTA Auckland over the water in New Zealand and historically this is a tournament where the underdog has gone well. This event was last played in 2020 where Serena won her last ever singles title. This time around it is packed with youngsters headed by Coco Gauff who is the 1 seed. Other youngsters include Fernandez, Raducanu, Fruhvirtova & Wang Xiyu. Older heads present are Muchova, Kenin & Stephens. Once again historically this tournament is won by a hard striker of the ball and Gauff must have a great chance of opening the season with a title.
