If the exporter receives payment in advance from the importer, the exporter has the option to accept the #payment but decline to ship the products.
A letter of credit from the importer's bank to the exporter's bank, which guarantees payment upon presentation of documents by the exporter attesting to the shipment—such as a bill of lading—is a typical solution to this issue. The letter of credit assures that the exporter will be paid as soon as the issuing bank verifies that the exporter shipped the products and that all agreement requirements have been fulfilled.
