Tracking Progress of Project
In this section, we have covered a variety of methods to keep track of your project. In this lesson we will learn about the Tracking Gantt view and how to use it. We will also look at using filters, completion indicators, and grouping to track progress in a project.?
Using the Tracking Gantt View?
When you would like to track current tasks in Project 2010 you should first apply the Tracking Gantt view, which is found under the Gantt Chart drop-down command on the View tab: ?
?
This view is not strictly required when tracking progress, but it will make things easier.??
Once this view has been applied you will be able to see that the Gantt Chart has been changed slightly to incorporate some tracking elements:??
In this view you can quickly see which tasks are completed and which are not by examining their progress percentage value. You will also notice that any tasks that are not complete will not be shaded in entirely.??
Tracking Overdue Tasks with Filters?
?You may also use filters to track down overdue tasks. To do this, click View – Filter – Late Tasks:?
Tracking Completed Tasks?
There are many ways in which you can track completed tasks. With the Tracking Gantt view applied, you will be able to see that task has been completed by examining two areas. The first area is the Gantt Chart itself; any completed task will include “100%” by it:?
?
In addition, you will be able to see the completion percentage value under the % Comp column of the Task Sheet
In other views you will be able to determine whether or not a task has been completed by its task indicator
Whenever a task has been completed, a checkmark will appear.?
Tracking Tasks with Grouping?
?Another method that you may use to track tasks in Project 2010 is grouping. The Group By drop-down box may be found in the Data group of the View tab:?
?
In the following image the Status grouping has been applied: ?
As you can see, when you group tasks this way they will be grouped by their status. Completed tasks will fall under the first group, late tasks will fall under another, and so on. This grouping will also be applied to the Gantt Chart. This is an invaluable technique when working on large scale projects that may include hundreds of tasks.??

To return to your original screen, select the No Group option from the “Group by” drop-down menu: ?
