A fast-moving wildfire broke out in Trabuco Canyon, Orange County, on Monday, September 9, 2024, rapidly burning 1,900 acres. Dubbed the Airport Fire, the blaze was unintentionally caused by heavy equipment used by Orange County Public Works crews, authorities said. Evacuations were quickly ordered for residents in Rancho Santa Margarita, and warnings were issued for surrounding areas.
What Sparked the Fire? According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the fire started around 1 p.m. along Trabuco Creek Road, near the Trabuco Flyers Club. Public works crews were working in the area when equipment sparks ignited the dry brush. Despite early firefighting efforts, the fire spread across both sides of the road, quickly growing in size.
Evacuations and Closures Evacuation orders were issued for residents along Meander Lane, Robinson Ranch Road, and other nearby streets. O'Neill Regional Park was also closed. Local schools, including Robinson and Trabuco Elementary, canceled classes for Tuesday due to safety concerns.
Firefighting Efforts in Full Force Helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and ground crews worked throughout the day to contain the fire. While the fire threatened local TV and radio towers, it began shifting away from residential areas by the evening. Firefighters are expected to continue battling the blaze into the night, with zero containment reported as of Monday evening.
