TQI QuickBits: Tweezing Out Scalability, Flagging Errors And More News In Quantum

The quantum technology ride is mostly a roller coaster -- lots of ups and down, lots of twists and turns, and it often leaves you a bit queasy and then elated.

This week we seemed to be enjoying elated part of the ride. There is just a sense that the progress -- particularly on the hardware side -- is escalating.

Some impressive work from Caltech and Amazon Web Services (AWS) this week offered further evidence that dramatic scientific advances are taking place and that this work is focused on the technological challenges that often appear at the top of the "why quantum won't happen" list, including quantum coherence and quantum error correction.

Feedback from some of the recent quantum conferences seem to align with this intuition. People are optimistic -- still cautiously optimistic -- but optimistic nonetheless.

Speaking of which, am I the only one who can't get Uptown Funk out of my head every time we received a report from the Global Quantum Symposium at uptownBasel ?

Enjoy your weekend!

If uptownFunk is your ear worm this weekend, you're welcome.

Quantum Quotes

Material scientists from the University of British Columbia Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute will lead the development of a multi-million world-class crystal growth facility thanks to $5.8 million in investments by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the B.C. Knowledge Development Fund.

"Just as the silicon age launched multiple trillion-dollar industries, the age of quantum materials is likely to foster intense economic development. The new facility will accelerate this search by enabling us to synthesize quantum materials that have remained out of reach in the high-quality single crystal form that is needed to characterize them and ultimately fashion them into technological devices.” --Alannah Hallas, University of British Columbia Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute investigator

IQM Quantum Computers (IQM), a global leader in building quantum computers, announced the launch of IQM Resonance, a cloud service to advance quantum exploration and research. This will give algorithm developers and scientists seamless and easy access to IQM’s advanced quantum systems to plan, develop, test, and benchmark their quantum algorithms.

“We are excited about this service to guide scientists to quantum advantage. To accelerate this goal, we have embarked on a dual-architecture quantum computing journey. First, quantum computers with standard square lattice QPU topologies are scaled in a straightforward?engineering approach. Second, we develop quantum computers that leverage long-range high-connectivity?QPU topologies and novel compute elements because practical applications will require significantly?improved hardware efficiency.” -- Mikko V?lim?ki, Co-CEO at IQM Quantum Computers.

Working In Quantum

The Working in Quantum series, a partnership between Oxford Instruments and TQI, offers a glimpse into the working world of quantum technology and explores the skills, experience and support needed in order to build a workforce that will drive the future of quantum forward.

This week, Kasra Sardashti, Clemson University discusses working in the field of quantum technology.

Making It Look Tweezy: Caltech Researchers Use Optical Tweezer Arrays To Trap Over 6,100 Neutral Atoms

A team of researchers say there's a path forward to increase the number of atoms trapped by optical tweezer arrays to tens of thousands, while still keeping very precise control over them. Although work remains, the achievement represents yet another scientific leap over hurdles that remain in the way of developing quantum computers that can be used for practical purposes.
