TQI QuickBits: Big Funding Week, Making The Braid, Quantum's Good Chemistry... And More News in Quantum

Wow -- a lot of congratulations to go around this week.

First, I missed this one last week, but better late than never: Zero Point Cryogenics raised $2.8 million (CAD).

At press time:

-- C12 raised 18 million Euros.

-- PQShield raised $37 million.

-- Wave Photonics secures £4.5 million.

-- Qblox reports $26 million in Series A Funding.

Converting all the currencies to dollars and then adding up the total. And by that I mean, asking ChatGPT to convert all the currencies to dollars and then adding up the total, we get: $88,425,000-ish.

One week, folks. One. Week.

Also, I'm afraid some of you think that I'm on the Quantinuum and 微软 payroll, but these companies have been making tremendous advances in quantum, especially over the last few months, that it's hard to ignore. Often, research reaches me piecemeal -- a study here, a study there, a study I miss -- but I'm beginning to see that these two companies are delivering on an aggressive research agenda that's a full-court press toward fault-tolerance. And it's incredible to watch.

Have a great weekend!

Microsoft announced this week the release of two new features — Generative Chemistry and Accelerated DFT — to enhance the productivity and accessibility of research in chemistry and materials science so that scientists can discover and analyze molecular compounds, among other investigations, more effectively and efficiently. The company adds that its

“Advances in AI and quantum computing have the potential to help researchers solve global scientific challenges. In the future, we plan to offer a quantum supercomputer that can simulate interactions of molecules and atoms at the quantum level, which is beyond the reach of classical computers. This capability is expected to transform research and innovation across many industries.” -- ?Dr. Nathan Baker, product leader, Azure Quantum Elements, Microsoft.

Quantinuum detailed an advanced quantum error correction technique this week that the team says is pushing the industry ever closer toward practical quantum computing. The work also hints at the way the company is tying together its multiple research approaches — from topological quantum computing to record-breaking fidelity that takes advantage of mid circuit measurement to quantum error correction — to build quantum computers that can make calculations in spite of environmental noise.

“One of the more interesting developments that I would highlight here is the emerging — and very obvious — point that theoretical ideas can only really be instantiated with full access to the ‘metal’ and that real acceleration will benefit from an early push into genuine ‘co-design’. The Genon code is astonishingly impactful and we will be hearing a lot more about its ability to lift performances across the board, and this will be highlighted alongside all our other work in this field ranging from error mitigation all the way through to examining natively fault tolerant qubits that we create through the exploitation of our hardware and generate non-abelian anyons’.” -- Ilyas Khan, Quantinuum founder and Chief Product Officer

Microsoft’s New Release Taps Generative AI, Quantum to Boost Molecular Research

Several important questions are — almost chronically — debated by quantum experts: Can quantum be used before they are fully developed, can quantum and artificial intelligence be integrated with scalability and what sorts of tasks will these new machines master first?

微软 has taken a swing at all three questions with its announcement that the company has introduced significant updates to its Azure Quantum Elements platform, according to Dr. Nathan Baker, product leader, Azure Quantum Elements, Microsoft, writing about the updates on the Microsoft Azure Quantum Blog. The company is also adding a twist by incorporating generative AI into the mix of tools that will be available to scientific teams.
