If I mention these names, the first thing to pop in your mind might not be "quantum companies." But, as this week's news shows, big corporations are showing a growing interest -- and concern -- in the opportunities -- and threats -- of quantum.
Why?
These corporations did not attain their leadership positions by watching other companies seize opportunities, or ignore future threats to their clients and customers.
There's a lesson for us all here because, likely, just as all companies are AI companies now (on some level), all companies will eventually become quantum companies (on some level).
Also. Happy Memorial Day to our US readers -- have a safe and fun holiday weekend.
And, what's the precedent here? Do I wish UK readers a happy bank holiday? Or a merry bank holiday? Help a yank out.
Regardless, have a great weekend!

Quantum Quotes
For centuries, physics operated under the assumption that the universe obeyed local, rational laws governed by classical mechanics. Then quantum theory emerged in the early 20th century, upending our understanding of reality at microscopic scales.
It turns out quantum mechanics is profound, beautiful... and a bit weird.
“Quantum mechanics is really the most profound disruption to our understanding of the physical universe that our species has ever encountered." -- Elise Crull, a philosopher of physics at CUNY
Aramco and Pasqal signed an agreement to build, maintain and operate a 200-qubit quantum computer to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
"The era of quantum computing is here. No longer confined to theory, it’s transitioning to real-world applications, empowering organisations to solve previously intractable problems at scale. Since launching Pasqal in 2019, we have directed our efforts towards concrete quantum computing algorithms immediately applicable to customer use cases. Through this agreement, we’ll be at the forefront of accelerating commercial adoption of this transformative technology in Saudi Arabia. This isn’t just any quantum computer; it will be the most powerful tool deployed for industrial usages, unlocking a new era of innovation for businesses and society." -- Georges-Olivier Reymond, CEO and Co-Founder Pasqal

QuickBits Spotlight
Every major university is engaged in quantum computing research on some level. Many are deeply engaged in quantum computing research — and many have been for the past few decades.
This list is an attempt to spotlight 20 top universities for quantum computing research. Although this is not even close to an exhaustive list and any sort of list that ranks quantum computing research is subject to a multitude of variables, care has been taken to move these rankings beyond just top-of-mind recognition and focus on research output.
Business QuickBits
Aramco, one of the world’s leading integrated energy and chemicals companies, has signed an agreement with Pasqal, a global leader in neutral atom quantum computing, to install the first quantum computer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Research QuickBits
Alice & Bob, a global leader in the race for fault-tolerant quantum computing, today announces the publication of its foundational research in Nature, showcasing significant advancements in cat qubit technology. This study, Quantum control of a cat-qubit with bit-flip times exceeding ten seconds, realized in collaboration with the QUANTIC Team (Mines Paris – PSL, Ecole Normale Supérieure and INRIA), demonstrates an unprecedented improvement in the stability of superconducting qubits, marking a critical milestone towards useful fault-tolerant quantum computing.
The power of quantum computers to deliver more medical treatments faster is often listed as a promising use case for quantum computing. A team of University of Chicago Medicine-led researchers say that might just be the beginning for the use of quantum in medicine, and, specifically, oncology.
For the first time, scientists at the Cavendish Laboratory have found that a single ‘atomic defect’ in a thin material, Hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN), exhibits spin coherence under ambient conditions, and that these spins can be controlled with light. Spin coherence refers to an electronic spin being capable of retaining quantum information over time. The discovery is significant because materials that can host quantum properties under ambient conditions is quite rare.

Pan Jianwei, a prominent physicist known as China’s “father of quantum,” has been elected one of the new fellows Royal Society in London. This honor comes amid recent US sanctions targeting the core of Chinese quantum technology. Pan, who serves as a professor of modern physics and executive vice-president at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), has been recognized for his significant contributions to quantum science, particularly in multi-particle interferometry and space-based quantum experiments. His work includes leading the launch of Micius in 2016, the world’s first quantum science satellite, which aimed to establish a secure communication link between China and Europe.
