TQI Quick Bits: Phasecraft Locked on Funds, Error-Correction Advance and More Quantum News
The Quantum Insider
Making Quantum Technology accessible through media, news, insights and data
Congrats to Phasecraft for successfully raising funds for its Series A. The company brought in £13 million, which along with previous investments and grants builds a total of £17 million in investing.
You'll also notice the leading investors who are backing the quantum algorithm developer are some rather big names in capital markets, I should add.
In other news -- pulled from a whole file drawer full of good quantum news issued this week -- a team of IBM Quantum researchers have announced a significant advance in quantum error correction. I probably do not need to tell anyone on this newsletter list that dealing with environmental noise -- which interrupts the concentration of calculating qubits much like my overly loud typing interrupts the concentration of my wife who is staring me down as we speak -- is one of the main, if not THE main, barrier to reliable quantum computing.
There's still work to be done, for sure, the researchers tell us, but progress -- from better quantum algorithms to quietly calculating qubits -- is being made every day.
√ote Alex
Still time to vote for Alex C. for Applied Intelligence's Technology Leader of The Year.
The TLoY is someone who can showcase outstanding success in the field of AI, IoT, or Quantum Computing by demonstrating innovation and leadership. The award is part of?Applied Intelligence Live! which will be held in Austin from September 20 - 21, 2023 at Palmer Events Center.
Possibly a biased opinion but... Alex is a visionary leader. At a time when people thought Quantum Supremacy was some sort of board game, Alex said: We need to create a way to get scientists who know about quantum to communicate with business and organizations that will eventually use it.
And our business was born.
But Alex didn't stop there -- he's continually advocated for ethical science communication, powerful intelligence tools, leading-edge marketing services and the democratization of deep technologies for emerging industries -- from #quantum to #AI to the #Metaverse to #space and beyond.
Plus, he also taught me what Plonker actually meant.
So, don't be a Plonker, cast your vote here.

Thales Group?—a French aerospace, defense, transportation and security gian — increasingly sees quantum a central deep technology. The company's chief scientific officer weighed in on Thales' quantum strategy.
“Our goal is to establish a quantum communication infrastructure for EU member states with the first tangible results in a three-year timeframe, to effectively counter any future quantum threat. The idea lies around having an ‘unbreakable key’. The first goal is to be able to secure the long-distance exchange of keys using satellite constellations. The second level is to achieve an exchange of quantum information. By having an unbreakable link of quantum computers in a network, complex calculations can be made at a much faster pace,” -- Chief Scientific Officer, Dr.?Marko Erman
Phasecraft landed £13 million in a Series A funding round. The new funding brings the total raised to £17.25M in venture funding, as well as a further £3.75M in grant funding, according to the company.
“For all the advances that have been made in quantum hardware, and for all quantum computing’s promise, such progress could end up being for nothing if we can’t build the applications needed to make the technology truly useful. With our record-breaking algorithms and groundbreaking techniques, we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in this space. With support from such a renowned deep-tech visionary as Playground, we think practical quantum advantage is achievable in years, not decades.” -- Ashley Montanaro, co-founder and CEO of Phasecraft

Quantum Research
An IBM Quantum-led team of researchers caused a buzz across the quantum ecosystem when they announced what might be a major advance for error-correction -- and, therefore, for reliable quantum computing, in general. The team members report in ArXiv that they achieved the same level of error suppression on 12 logical qubits with the surface code would require more than 4000 physical qubits. This, they say, brings a low-overhead fault-tolerant quantum memory within the reach of near-term quantum processors.
A lot of work and challenges remain -- but it's a solid step!
You can read about the study on ArXiv.

A team of researchers have introduced what could be significant advancement in quantum error correction. In a study posted on the pre-print server ArXiv, the team, which was led by IBM Quantum scientists, report on a?protocol that addresses a critical challenge in quantum computing – the susceptibility of quantum bits (qubits) to errors – by establishing a practical threshold for effective error correction.
